Took a bit more relief out, down to about 0.005" and things are much rosier :)

To get the relief down to 0.005 from 0.040 has taken a touch over half a turn on the truss rod, so all still in the minor range of adjustment.

I'll let the neck settle here for a few days and tweak from there. By then I'll be much more settled into this action and probably be hiking up my J!

Thanks, Rich and BigBeatNut! I'll try to post pictures within a week. This was one of those decisions that I was able to make quickly because I've been wanting to try one of these. It's pretty rare that a used one comes on the market. I have to admit that I feel guilty, like I'm cheating on my Mouse, which has been such a great bass these past few years. May need therapy for that :-) Speaking of Mice I saw the used one at BassNW and it looks really, really good.

Will be interested to hear your thoughts. I had a couple of Mice and ended up having a tough time swapping between 30" and 34/35" scale. Most don't have that issue and truth be told I probably could have worked through it like I did transitioning back to 4-string from 5. But I also find the tone of the Deep5 to be damn near perfect, with more punch and articulation than the Mouse. I get why guys dig the Mouse, especially if they are going for the upright thing - it is HUGE and ridiculously easy to play. I just find that the Deep5 is probably the closest to the bass sound in my head and I want to use it for most everything except when I need a fretted slap thing. My MB-2 rocks, but I'm wondering how a Deep 4 would compare. Not sure how much the 35" scale affects things with the Deep 5. Plus I like having the 2-band eq onboard.

Today I selected the woods for my custom Solid 4 from photos Rob sent me. He says he'll pretty much get right on it (I've been in the queue since April) so perhaps I'll see it in August :bassist:

bman, congrats on your used Mouse. I saw it up close when I bought the Deep 5 the other day. It is absolutely beautiful, and I'm sure you'll be delighted. Keep us posted!

Nostatic, switching from the Mouse to the Deep5 is definitely weird for me. I am a real advocate for the Mouse and yet I've wanted to try a Deep5 as long as I knew they existed. Plus, your posts have egged me on....

It's an awesome bass with a lot brighter attack than the Mouse. So far, it's just strange playing 35" scale, but after all, if you start play mostly from the 5th "fret" (if I can call it that on a fretless), the scale is less than 35"... at least I appears to be. But it's still quite an adjustment for me. The really test will be how it sounds with my jazz group a few weeks from now (a new team that rehearses once a month for now).

Rob's basses play very "short", so I have no problem with my 35" scale on the Deep 5. The attack is very different on my D5 than with my Mice. I like mid punch and focus and the D5 delivers that along with big low end. You can get Mouse-like with the D5 by playing up near the edge of the fretboard and it also depends on your right hand technique.

I've used a D4 in jazz settings since I got my first one years ago. It's just fine as long as people can get over the aesthetic that it's not an upright, of course :) My original and new D4s have different, but similar, voices. The new one is clearly more versatile given the pickup configuration, and I love what it can do so far. Rob's instruments are verstile sonically, although I don't think the D4 would fit in well with the Rush tribute band I was in years ago lol

My original D4 is a 35" but feels a bit more like a 34, although I can tell the difference between the original D4 and my new one which is 34". It's subtle.

However, I've tried a Mouse at Bass Northwest and it's a different thing. I also owned a Mustang for awhile (also learned on one), so it's possible to go between scales of basses - it's a matter of practice.

I stopped by the shop and dropped my MB-2 off for a hardware swap (once you go black...) and some action lowering action. Made the mistake (!) of A/B-ing a Deep 4 with my MB-2.

Will go back next week to pick out the top for the Deep 4...

I'm glad I don't live close to Rob's shop, I'm already on my 4th RA in less than three years :)

I saw a few interesting bodies there :p

I love my Deep 5 and briefly played a Deep 4. I think the preamp and the body thickness make a difference. Just a different tone than the MB-2. Rob suggested going with the exact same woods as my D5 - walnut neck and top, alder body.
