I think that Rob was suggesting that because I am totally satisfied with the sound on my D5 so he wants to replicate that - mostly the neck wood/body wood combo. I'm a walnut neck kinda guy and I think the 5-piece Deep neck has a bit different attack than the one-piece on the MB-2/Mouse.

Tonight I just got a fretless 5 string MB-2 that I picked up from the classifieds. Walnut top, ash body, and walnut neck. This is my first Rob Allen, and there is a reason I say my first, :bassist: this thing is amazing!! My main bass is a MTD 535 that I would never part with, but this is just worlds different and from the first time I picked it up has been completely inspirational, and is making me think about playing in a different way.

I never thought I could get a bass guitar with such a smooth feel and upright tone. This bass can do so much, compliments my 535, and will really push my playing styles. I am certainly a new Rob Allen fan for life.

I know this is a Show Us Your Rob Allen thread, so I promise pics in a day or two.

I just picked up a used MB-2 today, serial number 172. I believe it is maple with a cocobolo fingerboard. It is in good condition, a few scratches and small dings but no major gouges, it plays well and it sounds great.

The fingerboard has some grime, mainly under the G and D strings. Any recommendations on what to clean it with?

this one won. I'm a sucker for more quirky/non-traditional tops. My Deep 5 is a fairly rare Claro walnut and this one is in the same vibe. Plus it is kind of a natural sunburst - and there is a ton of curl, it just doesn't show up in the pics

That will be quite lovely. But then, how can a Rob Allen not be? :)

I have my MB-2 strung with a high C. You can get the string from either Rob Allen or juststrings.com.

Rob said there was a difference between the strings he sells direct and the strings from juststrings. The lower four strings on my bass are from Rob with the high C from juststrings. They sound fine to me.

I had to postpone the custom RA til next year. In the interim I purchased the enigmatic "Deep Typhoon" fretted custom on sale here in TB.

The bass is a 32" scale in mahogany and a Koa Top built around a 1970's Ovation Typhoon pickup (made by D'Armond in the US).

The original person who commissioned the bass "rode it hard and put it away wet"...a lot of dings and bruises but no functional problems. Those we can take care of.

I thought I'd replace the tuners with black and the pickup with an active rig....but wait! Wound some new labella tapes on it and I gigged the bass with my band. It sat beautifully in the mix. Great bottom, warm mids. I find the scale works very well for my paws.

Rob is sending me a decal (the original owner didnt want one). I'm also pondering having the gloss top buffed up a bit.

Glad I took the chance on buying it.

Will try to post clips Asap.

Very cool Rich. I love a pickup in the neck position.
