Good for you! I've been at a few leadership sessions where I had to challenge my self-limiting thoughts. Surprising by-products can come out of those kind of sessions and it sounds like you're having a great time! Very cool outcome.

Pretty sure this is my fretted Mouse (definitely one of my Rob Allens). This is a funk band I used to play with a few years back. Live recording running straight into the board. The sound guy loved the bass

I was running my FEA dual band comp, but that is it. People tend to think that RAs are a one-trick pony, and while that may be true, it is a *great* trick that can be used for more than just faux upright. I've used them on straight funk gigs like that as well as some rock stuff. They have a really quick attack due to the piezo and then a huge bloom. A good compressor helps to tame that a bit, especially in boomy rooms. Since that was a feed from the board, you're hearing the bass with some comp and that is it though.

Specifically I'm wanting help in deciding on a combo amp for the Mouse that I've ordered.
For now it will be played in a practice / class room environment.
I'm studying Jazz so as cliche as it may sound I'm wanting a more upright sound.
I've been studying/practicing with a J Bass strung with GHS nylon tape wounds through a GK MB 150s. I always keep the eq completely flat.
I play strictly finger style pretty hight over the neck.
As far as price range I'd like something around 1k or less obviously if I can get what I want for less.
I had been checking out this Phil Jones Briefcase which seems like a solid solution for what I need.

Just my personal preference, and I'm sure there will be others, is to use equipment that is as uncolored as possible to allow the natural tones of the Rob Allens to remain as pure as possible. For example, Acoustic Image and Euphonic Audio.

First, I would avoid the Briefcase. Not even enough oomph as a bedroom practice amp. If you are interested in the Phil Jones line-up, the Flightcase is IMO the one to get for low volume playing. Very nice sounding combo, if a bit pricey.

Most combo's will work fine if the EQ has a way of controlling the huge low end of these basses. Cutting quite a bit of low end (below 50hz) allows the midrange to speak nicely, and gives more of the impression of a double bass, with that 'woody growl' and bloom down low.

My favorite rig for the Rob Allen is the TC RH450 210 combo.... attenuated down low and up top to naturally bring out the tone I describe above. The built in tuner and very powerful EQ is a bonus. Not a featherweight, but very nice.

The very small GK MB150 combo (the little metal 112) also works very well with this bass.

If you want a bigger, wider tone, the Acoustic Image combos sound quite good also. A bit more relaxed and wide and full, at the expense of midrange compexity and growl.

+1 That little unit is really something for a specific DB tone (that sort of Eddie Gomez uber midrange or Tommy Kennedy sort of thing). Still a viable product after 20+ years on the market! It won't do a ton of real low end, but many DB tone goals result in guys using hi pass filters set quite high to 'uncover the mids' from the big low end anyway. That little combo does that automatically (for better or worse, depending on your DB tone concept).

I bet that sounds great. Those two cabs are additional examples of very warm voicings with lots of midrange character, and rather attenuated low end. Works great with these basses!

4 or 5 years ago, I bought an Acoustic Image Claurus and a Contra-Ex extention cab. For practice it is the most enjoyable sounding set up for my Rob Allen Deep 5 and Mouse. They just sound awesome to me and you can set the filter to cut the lows as much as needed. I also have a couple of Epifani UL-110's for when I need more forward facing speakers and they sound excellent as well. In fact, the Clarus and Epifani pair was highly influenced by KJung's postings several years ago and so I echo Peter Palmieri's suggestion that you pay close attention to Ken's recommendations.
