Show Us Your Rob Allen Basses Part IV

So...I am going to list my MB-2 lined fretless tonight so hit me up if you are interested.

I love the bass but just can't do 35" (especially fretless) as all my other basses are 34". I will be ordering/buying the same bass in 34".

It is a 2008, walnut/ash/ebony and is in amazing shape. Comes with the Protec gig bag.

My new (rebooted) 3-piece band project, The Stormy Weathermen, just had its first gig. The music is original instrumental in a surf/rock style. I used a Zoom H6 to record the gig and produced a video of one song. In it I used a Rob Allen Solid 4 strung with groundwounds and played with a pick. I recorded the bass directly through a Radial JDV so it's "pure bass tone" with no amp/cab filtering. Later I'll post a video using a Rob Allen Deep 4 fretless.

great tone for a handheld recorder.
If you don't mind me asking, how did you swing all the different camera angles?

I was expecting to see tiki torches too.

The Zoom H6 has mic attachments, but I didn't use those. Instead, it was just an input device to capture sound. My recording setup for the Zoom's six XLR inputs included:
  • Bass - Radial JDV DI
  • Guitar - Shure SM57
  • Snare - Shure SM57
  • Kick - Sennheiser MD421
  • Drum Kit Overhead - Audio-Technica AT825 stereo mic
WAV files were processed in the Presonus Studio One DAW.

Four video cameras were mounted around the band on stands. They included three cheap Zoom cams and a nice Canon HD videocam in front. I edited the feeds with Sony Movie Studio Platinum 13 and synchronized them with the processed WAV file.

This Friday we have another gig, a town festival. I'm going to use Y connectors into each of the H6's inputs, and run additional XLR mic cables into the PA system for big sound support using my recording mics. These are cheap, low-tech solutions but they are simple ... and they work well.

P.S. I just published a blog post where I explained in more detail how this video was produced:

That's the Courroie Y Strap made for me by Michèle Morin. I've used these for many years. Balanced, light, strong, no extra gear required. And Michèle is super nice to work with.

I first saw a Rob Allen instrument at Bass Northwest in Seattle, and decided I needed to have one. This one has a burl spalted maple top, ash body, birdseye maple neck, and ebony fingerboard. Amongst Rob Allens, I guess the most unique feature is the abbreviated lines on the edge of the fingerboard (slightly longer at the 12th fret position).

Thanks. Is your strap medium or long?
