Show Us Your Rob Allen Basses Part IV

Has anyone tried the new LaBella Copper Whites on their RA bass..? I have been faithfully happy with the original black nylon tapes but I am curious about these Coppers and how they compare....I tried the standard White nylons when they first appeared and found them too bright and zingy. Any comparative feedback?

Yup

An audio comparison of black vs. white as below. Is the copper/whites yet a third option I don't know about? If so, apologies in advance.

What a beautiful bass! Congrats - may that beauty give you many years of joy, happiness and good service!

Anyone else get pictures "in progress" from Rob as he was building your bass?

Not sure if he still has time to do it, but when he built my Mouse, nearly fifteen years ago, he sent me in-progress pics. I suppose he took them himself, but whoever did, is quite a good photographer.

If you have them please post them. Here are mine. I picked out the flamed and spalted maple for the top at this shop, I fell in love with it. I also had him dye the rosewood fingerboard ebony black so the figure in the rosewood didn't compete with the highly figured top:

Lovely mouse you have there !

Thanks!

Yeah, I am head over heels, mostly a medium scaler but I pull out the Mouse shortie when I know I am in for a long writing or drilling session. It's just too easy on those fingertips.

I was on the fence about one until Rob showed me the spalted and quilted maple. I almost fell over and knew in that moment I was in love and had to have one....

Although I must say - I have yet to see a Rob Allen that is LESS than incredible!

He is such a talented Artist!

:smug:

Thanks,

Ok, quick string question....

My MB2 has the original black Labella tapes on from from 2008. I always change strings when I get a new bass but I just love the tone from these old black Labellas and am not sure if I can justify changing them.

So my question is this.... If I switched to a new set of Labella white tapes, copper tapes or new black tapes, what is that really going to buy me? Clarity? More high end? Etc.....

My strings are 2 years old, and I can't imagine changing them.
I have 5 sets in stocks, so about 10 years without buying any strings...
Hope it could be the same with all my basses...

Question : I got an mb2 in trade and I absolutely love it! So much so that now I am gassing for a mouse - I have small hands and I love that upright vibe. So the question is for those that own both an mb2 and a mouse - is there reason to have and keep both ?
Tell me your stories !

Thank you very much for posting this video.

I love the tone and the magnetic pups bring a focused sound with still a lot of air.
Even with Fodera strings, this is a very original sounding.
By watching the pictures of your bass, I guess your neck would support a 16mm string spacing.
You may probably be able to change the bridge and get the space you like.

And nice playing ! love the last part with the loop. Very Houlmanien

Hey Guys

Quick Video of my RA fretted 5 high C! Strung with Fodera Nickel strings gauge 0.28-100. First it's the Piezo, then both and pickup only! The string spacing is very tight! Not 16 mm as BassNW said but closer to 14 mm. It's okay but not sure if the Labella black nylons string will fit on this bass! That would leave any space between the strings :)

Sounds great and very nice playing. The high C works so well with the chordal stuff!
Congrats!
