Show Us Your Rob Allen Basses Part IV

I can't remember if I've shared a pic of my two recently, this is for you Ken!

No F hole on your Deep. Interesting.

Another update on the Bud as well as the Pyramid tapewounds. Rehearsal number two with both, and I'm liking things quite a bit. As much as I've used the PJB Double Four for quite some time, the sound coming out of the Bud is a pleasant change. Let me be clear: I'm not wholly unhappy with the Double Four, and still feel it's a good fit for a RA.

The true test for the Bud will be the upcoming gigs in July.

I've got a bunch of gigs on this now and:
I don't notice the 35" scale anymore, even playing 34's on the same job.
I set the trim pot in the center because why not?
I haven't changed strings because why?
I'm amazed at how much right hand technique and placement effect tone.
Jaco? Play by the bridge.
Kinda normal? Center.
DB tone? Move towards the neck.
A bunch of variants of all those can be had just by how you attack the string and what part of your finger you use.
Also, I may put these black tapes on my other two fretless basses. They're great.

I'm looking for new amplification to go with my Deep 5. I know the AI Clarus gets a lot of love from RA owners, but I don't see mention of anyone using the AI Ten2 combo - basically the Clarus paired with the cab. Anyone using this that can give some feedback on it?

I'm getting very good results using my MB-2 with a Zoom B3n.

I run the signal from the pedal into a small mixer which is feeding 2 small 10inch powered mains and the Marbass is eq'ed as a sub which I control from an aux out. I use this setup for small duo and trio setups.

I'm mainly using the B3n for its compressors and amp and speaker modeling, using them as different eq presets. Sometimes a bit of chorus and reverb is nice also.

I have a Ten2 cabinet that I use with both AI Clarus and Focus heads. It sounds great with my Rob Allen MB-2.

I wound up getting the EA iAmp Doubler with a Bergantino HDN 212. I absolutely love them with my Deep 5 and with my Charvel solid body. Very clean sound - my basses, but louder.

Those pics reminded me of an oldie but a goodie; this is from about 10 years ago on stage at Fuel Nashville. My first mb-2—a 5 string:

I sold it to help pay for a move to East Tennessee, but it was a great instrument and perfect for the alt-folk originals gig I had.

I was telling my SO the other day that if I could only keep ONE bass (of 6 uniquely different basses I currently own, including my Engelhardt), it would be my current medium scale (4 string) mb-2. Sadly, it's been in the closet for over two years. I play a lot of theater, jazz, and bluegrass, but all those groups want me to bring the upright. :( When I do get to take out the electrics, it's a 5 string or P/J or J that most fits the situation.

And, knock wood, I don't see a future scenario where I can only keep one bass...
