Are there any MB-2 or Mouse owners in Northern California (SF Bay Area/Santa Cruz) who would ever be willing to let a fellow bass enthusiast try theirs? Also I can reciprocate by letting a Rob Allen owner try out my 5 string short scale Birdsong (in the picture) and a couple of Birdsong's simpler ShortBasses, if anyone is curious about those.

I may have to reward myself with a RA for getting through the divorce with my sanity mostly intact. Sounds like a good excuse, anyways!

I've owned 2 MB2s and a Mouse 30.
After spending the last 3 yrs trying to become proficient on the upright, I'm throwing in the towel. Swollen little finger, and other issues. Obviously i want my next RA to sound as upright as possible. I'm not that concerned about the short vs long scale because I can get used to either one. I do want a 4 string. Does the deep 4 sound more upright like then the others? It's hard to say listening to some on line.
I'm looking forward to more relaxed playing and less pain!

The Deep is an awesome bass but I didn't find it to sound any more like an upright than my MB-2. A friend had a similar experience and sold his Deep as well.
A number of friends who have an MB-2 and a Mouse believe that the Mouse sounds more like an upright than the MB-2. I could never get comfortable with the shorter scale so I sold off the Mouse.

My Deep 4 works well in all jazz situations, but I find the choice of string and then the amp you use greatly affect how that all turns out. Plus, it also depends on how you play it. I've always had a pretty upright approach to bass, even on my fretted P. Is it 100% like an upright? No, but pretty close if you know what you're going for. I'm sure a Mouse or MB-2 would be great as well and the three are more similar than different overall since they share the same philosophy.
EDIT: Also keep in mind, Rob also did a few things in mine to make it a bit more upright-y, but this was when he was still doing custom work. YMMV

Used RA basses don't show up often. IMO you'd have better luck stalking Rob's site for a new one or look here in the classifieds. eBay is an unlikely source since your average person who knows about RA is likely to be found here. You could also check places like Gruhn or other higher end stores that sell basses.
