It definitely does require a lot more finesse and focus! I am enjoying all the extra room on the fretboard!
And I also don't think I'll ever stop playing four string. It's a whole lot of fun in a whole different way.
I do find it interesting that I prefer the four and six, but not the five as much. I wonder what that's about.

Having played 5 stringers, I find having the extra C string really opens so many different chordal options when writing music, all all the notes of a 4/5 string are within the 5th and 12th frets no my 6 string, which means less shifting but the patterns are identical throughout.

I've had this one for a long time. Originally, it was sent to me by a customer. He was a great guy, he wanted it converted into a wide five string resonator bass.

The more I worked on it, the more I couldn't see it turning out like the customer wanted. And to be honest, I was going through some life stuff. I got behind with the project. In the end I purchased it from him (I was to blame for the situation, not the customer). I have owned it every since. It has lived in it's huge case, waiting for me to figure out what to do with it.

For the right person, its a pretty cool bass. The body is from a Kramer Ferrington 4 string bass, I've seen a few of the Nashville studio players use these with a Fender style fretless (4 string) neck attached and tapewounds for an "upright tone). The6 string neck for this was built by a fairly well known builder; The cool thing is he built it so the neck fit into the original four string neck pocket. It is a lined fretless. The bridge is custom made by the same builder (it is lifting, and needs to be removed and reglued). The pickups are two Martin piezo guitar pickups (remember, this was modded almost twenty years ago.


Maybe one day. At the very least, I need to put it together to turn it.

First is my Kiesel Vader VB6 and the second is a Kiesel Osiris 6. Both are tuned B- E - A - D - G - B - I also play guitar and tuning the C to a B just makes sense to my brain.

I have three but this Bordwell was made to my specs, flat fingerboard, single dual coil in a ramp, super lightweight, sounds amazing. Tuned B-C with low tension balanced nickel rounds.

Yes. Those are old pics. The fretless had the pink DR Neons. Both basses are now rocking NOS Carvin and the equivalent LaBella nickels with tapered B and E strings.
