Love the Fiesta over sunburst in particular.
“Who likes the relic look?” shut down in 5.5 hours. I was able it get in my 2¢ in before the lock.
I'm not surprised. I think it really comes down to how the thread was initially introduced - a question as a title/heading is asking for it. As you've noticed I set ground-rules in my first post (2013) and I monitor the thread pretty diligently because I know it doesn't take much to send it south. The mods are on my side and will intervene if someone becomes a problem. We have been very lucky to not have too many such issues so we can all enjoy the subject covered here over nearly 7 years/174 pages/3468 posts! Let's all keep it what I intended, a resource library of distressed/relic'd basses (and the occasional guitar, etc).
Here's an example of an 'etc' distressed finish -

You’ve been doing a great job, I haven’t seen any negative posts on the thread.
Or maybe over black...
True. Though over sunburst was fairly common as it was easy to botch a burst - and then just do a solid color over it (and then charge more for it!)
Currently resurrecting a '66 with the same look - doing a faded to coral Fiesta over sunburst.

All nitro, of course![]()

Looks great David! So are you spraying it yourself?
... plus he'll give all the coats full time to cure and I know that if I have it here I can get impatient and move to the next step sooner than I should.
No, I'm having a friend do it. I've done nitro finishes quite a few times - I thought about going with black over white primer and would have done that myself but with a color finish I know he can do better - plus his relic skills are excellent (will have him 'age' it lightly to match the neck wear and hardware, etc. - no point in going over burst if some bits aren't showing here and there). Am doing a matchng headstock as well. Also worth it to me to pay him not to have to breath that stuff and he has all the equipment, spray booth, etc - plus he'll give all the coats full time to cure and I know that if I have it here I can get impatient and move to the next step sooner than I should.
Another nice drop. Is that a Fano at top? I recognize the headstock but don't think I've seen a body design like that from them - at least not a bass.
