The Q (N)'s had active EMG's, v-v-t with a 9V battery. The second compartment is odd as the one seems big enough to fit the electronics and one 9V battery. Would be interesting to see the inside of both compartments. Maybe that was were the stash went?

I’ll respond - because this is what Steinberger and Gibson told us: balance. With that rout in place, the bass kind of naturally “sits” at the right angle.

We ended up getting three over my tenure. The lightest one was 10 1/2 pounds. Without it, it probably would have been 12-13 on average.

I wondered if that was what was going on. I've done the same to get a basses weight down.

I definitely get why. Per them, if someone wanted to add electronics or another battery or two (back then, that was a potential selling point - Bass Player magazine even referred to running a set of EMGs at 27 volts in one of their pickup shootouts), that was a logical place - or if they wanted to add a different preamp, etc….again, making lemonade to try to make a negative a positive.

Yah, 1.5" maple body = heavy. My 1-1/4" thick koa bodied Factorbird fretless is also heavy (9lbs/4oz) as koa is is a very dense wood. I can't complain though - it's a TSO that doesn't 'neck-dive'. ;) :bassist:

...and tuner-bridge - I bought the neck new from Phil in '94 when I had a fretted '86 Ex-Factor. The tuner-bridge was from a FCS Kubicki I bought for cheap because it was missing the pu's & 9v pre. It had an unlined fretless Ex-Factor neck that I had Phil plane and then sold it. I used the body to make a passive hybrid Kubicki/Jazz. (JFactor) There's a pic of it on the Kubicki Factor fb page on one of their site sections. It is 34" scale and as a Hipshot drop-D.
