I am thinking of refreshing it a bit, nothing non-revisable. New tort pickguard, and some sort of Hagstrom Bisonic copy to replace the Guild DeArmond pickup.
I saw this on Craigslist and came really close to buying it. I hope it sounds as fantastic as it looks!

The DJ Bebop Reef Aires P Bass Of Doom.
Yep, I was a kid and got it in the 70s for for 150 Pastoolas. This started life as a 1962 P bass. My idols at the time were from the San Francisco club of bass players, Jack and Phil plus Berry Oakley of the Allman Bro., all modified bass players. I played it awhile stock as I was learning but the bug of trying to make it do more (remember I was a no-nothing kid) and trying to follow my idols I began to experiment with it.
First it was the Guild-DeArmond pu at the neck. Then an in-out of phase switch between the two pu’s. Next was the jazz pu, dropping the tone control for the third volume and a second phase switch. During all this as Jazz Fusion was raising its head. I was listening to a lot of Percy Jones and Alphonso Johnson. So the old P bass took another hit and went fretless, oh and string thought body like an old original P or Tele bass. I did the fretless thing because of listening to Percy and Al as Jaco hadn't made the scene yet, but his influence was felt when he did.
Also during this time of learning to play I got hooked up in this band, that I named and they accepted, The Reef Aires. They were a little ahead of their time, imho, in the respect of being a jam band playing Dead, Airplane, Quicksilver, Moby Grape, Zappa in the ‘70s before it was a thing, as cover material in clubs and taverns. Anyway my modified bass worked great in this setting and being the youngest in the band, in my early teens, it was quite the learning experience. I enjoyed it most because before I was playing bass, that was the music I was listening to. So it really made a deep connection to me.
I kick myself for modifying it sometimes but if I didn't, I don't think I would have had as good of a time as I did.

Gibson EB1 on eBay - no indication if '50s original or late '60s RI - but judging from the price & plastic saddles - late '60s RI. Nice checking regardless. Also, '50s originals had a black mud-bucker and this one has modern Y-tuners & non-original 'speed-knobs'.
