Witnessed this splendid example of a '65 J at a guitar shop (on consignment) with nicely aged Oly white over sunburst (the real deal) including matching hs face. Wish my pics were a bit better as there was nice subtle nitro chequing.

There's mojo but that is just gross. I'd imagine 50 years of playing with unwashed hands could look like that - and that bass has probably never seen a polishing cloth or a single drop of guitar polish.

drool STUNNING I don't care what others think for me, you can't beat a beaten & distressed Fender Bass . If only I had the money to buy one

I love old basses and really dig beat up worn out funky ones but that thing is nasty. I don't wipe my basses down but all that finger funk is way gross.

I agree - when I got my '66 P, it had some of that nasty stuff on the upper neck mostly but nowhere near that level of gunk. I cleaned it off and it didn't lose an ounce of "mojo" The romantic notion of a bass from the trenches realistically needs to be handled with latex gloves.

I also took the pg off and cleaned both surfaces - "foul" cry the collectors - removal of 'foul' was my goal!

In the process I found the 'ES' (entered special) stamp which was common on sunbursts.(only in '66) Usually the stamp was used for custom colours and NAMM show basses.
