My friends 80's G&L gee-tar that he bought a few years back from someone in Texas. Love the checquing and notice the front with green oxidation (from sweating) effecting the metallic paint. It needed a fret-job (this thing was played!) but when that was done it lives on to be an awesome player! (and looks the part!)

It's an '81 - the 1st year. It's possible it was a lacquer finish back then, even in a time when Fenders were all poly. Nitro just ages more gracefiully as it shrinks/becomes thinner over time. (and in Texas - probably effected by heat) Poly (from then) was thick and not going anywhere! Within these thread pages, there are some bizarre potato-chipping on some of these thick poly finishes - but lacquer allows a more personal adaptation.

That's a good example of what I was describing - what it is probably is the clear sealer/base-coat didn't bond dynamically with the finish-coat (black in this case) and when the checquing began it lifted the edges of where it separated and started curling up and flaking off. When I see this I assume years of heat/cold (wide temp changes) were what started the process.

On the bottom is a slight tint of orange or red. Is this another color that faded or do you think this originally was gold?

I think it's reflecting off of my red T-shirt. It is the original colour which is a very cool gold that's aged nicely. G&L had a bunch of interesting colours back then - from glitzy (sparkle) to drab (brown).

That would make sense. I have seen some faded Fender CAR look almost like a copper and was wondering if maybe G&L's CAR took on any other interesting colors over time.

Earlier this year Elderly Instruments had a 70's P bass with this faded CAR finish that almost looked like Fender's Copper finish but still has these beautiful flashes of red on the edges and back.

A nice example of creative interpretation. It's what so many people miss about some (not all) self-created 'distressing'. It's a 'look' and that Strat nailed that look. Is is "authentic", realistic, attempting to fool someone? The answer to all three would be no - as in, not the point. That look and shiny sunburst equally are both finishes/looks. Some peeps don't like sunburst...

Thank you! I think this is something we all to often miss as a relic doesn't necessarily need to be authentic in any way, and further more being that no old guitar is subject to the same set of circumstance chasing "authentic" can be a bit of a farce in and of itself.

I like to look at distressed instruments like I look at an abstract painting. IMO where they win points is the work involved or at least the look that there was some form of talent that went into its creation, that it has a story or two to tell ect...
