Show your DIY Cabs

This is my 2x10" "creature" (built with the help and suggestions of Bill Fitzmaurice, Sundogue, GreenBoy and some other user) loaded with 2 BP102s and one 18Sound 6ND410.
You can notice the external crossover, with cut freq. at 600 Hz 12 dB/oct.
I decided not to put the crossover inside the cab since it is temporary because I'm (slowly) building a DIY Class-D amp with Coldamp modules equipped with a two ways active crossover so that I can go bi-amp with the actual amp head.

After finishing the new amp head I will start the building of a "twin" cab to complete the rig with a "double" 2x10"+6".

A little update on that 2x10...

There are a couple of these bad boys in there now. They're basically better all around.

Here's mine. It's a transformed SWR Workingman's 12.

I purchased this cab used with a blown out amp. I just wanted the cab. It' sounds great. My goal was to lighten it and keep the sound the same so I can use it as my main portable practice cab with my Ampeg PF350.

I kept the internal volume the same and used the same port with 1/2 ply. I also propane torched the front and rear for some texture. Finish is 4 coats of sanded Fromby's Tung Oil over wood stain. Funny because I just realized this cab is like the Ampeg SVT210 which I used to own two. This cab sounds a little more old school being a little more round. I wanted to ditch the tweeter, but figured I might as well leave it and roll back the highs if I needed too.

I wonder how two of these will sound? ha ha . . .

So here is my 2x12 homebrew, been having a lot of back issues so I made the design and had a friend provide the labor. :)

I basically researched the Eminence volumetric guide for the drivers (no software for me) and and used the ports from another builder we all like. I made the cab a little wider and deeper than your average these days and I went in a semi unique direction for drivers. Top driver is an Eminence Beta 12LTA 8 ohm and bottom is an Eminence Beta 12A-2 8 ohm. It goes up to 8k with no crossover needed and the dang thing has more punch than any cab I have ever heard and is real nice and tight with a Low B or Low A. It weighs 77 pounds, the Betas are not a heavy driver and the thing will take plenty of power.

I took some 16 gauge diamond plate, bent in an angle and screwed it to three sides of the bottom and I also made the dual speak-on jack plate out of the same steel.

Here is the 410 I built with the design from the tech at U.S speaker,New Jersey.42 HZ to 15k.Absolute kills the following cabs-SWR Golieth II,Avatar Neo 410,Berg Neo 610,Eden XLT410 Ampeg 410 HLF..My cabs ,or were being the Avatar ,Bergantino,Eden. It's a large 6.2 cubic ft cab.It uses the under- rated BP 104's,(because most install in the incorrect size cab)Eminence high pass 2 way cross over, and the new Eminence horn with front mount H.D L-pad.Huge deep tight bass, rich mids and smooth detailed top.It likes lots of clean power( 800 watt power amp)I can not say enough about his design,as it flat out is impressive. My other "chopped" cab is an old EV 606 215 cab cut in half, one port blocked, loaded with a kinda rare Fender-EV B-15 that came in the Fender StudioBass 200 watt tube head.It sounds okay with the studioBass combo cab. It's just too small. It sounds much better in the EV cab.-Cost? free, plus a tube of adheasive and a ten buck grill. My other modded cab is an old Eden D-153-T loaded with a better 15-the Legend CB-15.again suggested by U.S. speaker. Now goes down to 39 HZ.After building the 410 cab for cheap,I will never buy another new cab.Buying used however, you run the risk of getting tired drivers that probably need a re-cone to sound right.

Here are some that I made some years ago, a 215, 115, 210, and a 212. Nothing fancy at all but they all have made me happy with the results. My brother was the "brains" behind the dimensions as he has much more knowledge of the sort. They are all way too heavy as they have internal framework. The drivers in the 215 are actually matched, one was reconed..........

Well, I am just about to build myself a 2 x 15 based on a doubled up TL606 cab that will also be modded to be built with 1/2" braced Baltic Birch ply rather than 3/4 stuff. I haven't built any DIY cabs for about 18 months because I've been doing a major home extension, remodelling and refurb on my house but, just before the house stuff started, I built two of Bill Fitzmarice's Jack 12 Lites for use as PA mains and a pair of Wedgehorn 8 monitors - all built in my old kitchen before the work on the house gave me a new kitchen.

They're still seeing regular gig use and look a little more battered these days but they perform really well; They've both got premium drivers in them (3012HOs in the Jacks) and they cost about as much as the Mackie SRM 450s that our previous singer took with him when he left the band, but they slay the Mackies for clarity, dispersion, tone and volume.

Wow. Great work. :woot:

I really hope that some of you guys can post threads documenting these builds. You know, start to finish, what plans, what driver selections, WinISD or other types of response modelling, parts sourcing, costs and cost budgets, types of wood, joinery, finish materials, etc. I'd like to see more of these types of threads available as a resource in the DIY section of the FAQ's as a lot of the designs there are dated, and having some newer designed stuff featured would be great.

There is really a wealth of info and new experience here I'd like to see tapped for the benefit of aspiring DIY'ers!

Always like to post these pics . This is a cabinet that I built with an Eminence CB158 15" driver and a horn design from a speaker building website , Audiokarma , that's called the Econowave for its use of an inexpensive constant directivity horn and horn driver . The idea of the cabinet was to use a fairly heavy woofer and horn for a full range bass cab in a lightweight cab using the build methods I learned from all the good speaker builders on Talkbass . The cab size and porting are from Eminence and it worked out great . Here's a link to the build several years ago .

I hadn't spotted this thread before - here are my DIY cabs, built earlier this year:

tmp_29103-20160213_133408-1536932011_zpsiblfpqbi.jpg

They're 12mm birch ply, about 45 litres with ports made from PVC drainpipe, tuned to 50Hz. The drivers are Eminence Beta 12A, and they're finished in "Turbo Blue" Tuff Cab paint, which is similar to Duratex. I guess they're quite modest compared to some of the efforts with high-end drivers, multi-way designs and that sort of thing, but they're a useful size, have reasonable efficiency and I like the sound.

Awesome work, how does it sound?
Where did you get the tolex?

The cab sounds surprisingly low. In fact I need to reduce LOW on my TC BH250 head whenever I play in a smaller room. It also sounds well in upper registers due its response peak at 1,5-3.5Khz area which I beehive adds the articulation and clarity.

The cover is not the tolex. Rather say vinyl or faux leather. Unfortunately, the exact material is not available anymore but if I remember correct it is made by SKAI. Here is the example: Invalid Link Removed

Thanks for the link.

I am contemplating a build for the summer and was thinking of a fairly compact 112.
