I'd rather an instrument look good, even after years, but if you are going to do this, subtle is better.
That's better. Was wondering when the "I don't get..." and "...play it for xx years..." crowd would show up and add nothing of value to the OP's original post. We should see some funny pictures of instruments being dragged behind a truck pics coming up soon, then some bashing, then the inevitable closed thread. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The OP is happy with his bass and was asking other people to post pictures of their own home-relic-ed instruments.
Anyways OP: Here's mine.
It's a 76 PBass I bought in '90. When I was young and stupid (now I'm not young) I abused the front of it to give it that "war-horse" look. I'd never to that to an instrument again, but if I did, I'd look at a number of well worn instruments and learn what they look like and then, chose one and base the wear on that. Anyway - It has 40 years of actual wear (most of which is actually mine) mingling with the abuse, so I'm not sure if it's a "relic" or not.
For the record, I beat it up with two things in mind - I wasn't in wonderful shape when I got it and it was a TERRIBLE sunburst - there were actual gaps in the red where you could see un-filtered yellow through - and I figured at some point I'd get around to re-finishing it natural. And the picture makes it look faker than it really does - the "sharp edge" too the wear and the contrast in colour isn't nearly as drastic in-person.

I'm almost 50 so I don't know if I'll have 40 years to personally relic anything (other than myself). That being the case, I have to fudge things a little. LOL!
Personally, I don't understand why the relic thing gets people so worked up. To me it's just another finish option.

No, not necessarily. I, and many others, like the look because, well, we just do. It's no different, to me, than people preferring blue basses, or tobacco bursts. What's the difference in that and just buying an old authentic relic and playing that (besides a few thousand dollars)? If I see a guy playing a real '65, I don't think to myself, that they must have played that bass since 1965.

Yes, you are right. It is all about personal taste. There is no right or wrong, good or bad. I thought that we were all simply expressing how we feel about something. If the reason for the thread was to only hear from those who agree then that is okay too.

I see nothing wrong with offering ones opinion, as long as it is done in a respectful manner. No thread has to be strictly a "fanboy" thread over a subject.
That's kind of the thing with relic threads after so many have been closed, usually better to not say anything at all if you're opposed to relic finishes. To me, it's just another finish option now, I don't want one, but I also don't mind them. Only thing that gets me is the price of a well done one, or the price of having an expensive instrument relic'd by a "pro", I'll leave it at that.
Please note the forum rules, however, that forbid things like relic bashing.

My 1994 Musicman Stingray that the guitar player of my band smashed his SG headstock into during a show. I wanted to fix the ding but ended up over sanding it and now this is what it looks like. Over the years it actually started to wear in nicely. So technically it's real road wear since the blemish was made 20 years ago, but I helped it along artificially

I really can't believe that someone would suggest that only approval and agreement are allowed here.
