Yeah I asked for a more straight and busy grained piece of ash for the
body. I've seen some pretty ugly looking ash out there and didn't want
that look on my Fbass. He gave me a choice of 3 different slabs of
ash. This one was exactly what I was looking for.

He said that the original ramp he made was made from the same
piece of wood that the body was cut from. For some odd reason it was
way lighter than the body so he got another piece of ash to make my
ramp (I think...) to make it match better. It's still a little bit lighter in
certain lights but I don't think most people would catch it. I don't think
it's possible to get it perfect anyways. I think that's why a lot of guys
just get black colored wood ramps. Even that great burl ramp that was
back a few pages is a little different.

Bumping up an old thread.

I just had two more ramps made, one for each of my basses. I had them made thin so they could sit on top of my pickups. I was a bit worried that I'd lose some output due to them being on top and having to lower my pickups a bit to have them fit, but I've had no issues so far. It's really nice having them there, as I like to pluck with my thumb in the upper ramp area and my three fingers in the pickup ramp area, and now I can do that.

It wasn't easy making them fit together with the ramps that were already there- I make the rear of my ramps higher so that there's a pretty consistent depth even as the strings get higher as they get closer to the bridge. They're not perfect, but they're close enough for me. The only issue is that they don't quite match in color. Has anyone tried staining a ramp and seeing if the stain wears off with the strings occasionally hitting them? I've attempted to paint a ramp in the past and the strings took that right off.

I made myself an over-the-pickups ramp for my jazz bass a few months ago, but lowering the pickups took away a lot of output and kick, so I took the ramp off. Now I need one that goes between the pickups. Who makes your ramps?

I know that is what it looks like, but in the end I couldn't do it.

I did not drill into the bass, but nor did I want to affix tape to that finish either...

... so I put tape on the SIDE EDGES of the ramp, and taped it to the side of the pick up cover on one side, and to the side of the finger board on the other side.

Also, on the VF5 (J pickups), that ramp isn't yet finished. George is making a plexi ramp that goes between the bridge pickup and the bridge.

(Pardon the poor picture quality.)
I got one made by First Quality Music here in Louisville Ky. Coincidentally, they make almost all of Ernie Ball's necks.

The first one they made was much slimmer, almost right along with the strings. But this thing is gorgeous gold!

I did when I first got my ramps over 4 years back. The problem with using velcro tape is that the velcro isn't dense enough, so the ramp will push down a little bit if you put pressure on it. The foam double stick tape doesn't.
