WOW that leduc is amazing.

check my ramp out. it's self made from a slab of acrylic, with polished cut faces and everything. and the best thing is, it fit's so snug, i don't even need screws or glue. just push it between the pickups and it's done ;-)

After trying ramps and loving the feel, I order ebony ramps with all my basses now.

My current Foderas and FBass have ebony ramps, my Valenti arriving in Jan will have a ramp and I will have a ramp made for my Ibanez 6er arriving in a couple of weeks.

They may look crappy to some, but I really like having a ramp on all basses except 4 string Fenders.

They're nothing like thumbrests. Your fingers touch the ramp beneath the strings as you pluck- it creates a stopping point for your fingers a very short distance below the strings. While you do have the option of using one like a thumbrest, that is not its primary function and not what most people do with them.

Ah, ok. I've never actually thought about the fact that it would stop your fingers. It's obvious now. Makes sense. My mistake.

It's a pretty common misconception, so you're certainly not alone. The best way to understand how it feels without actually trying one is to pick up a fretless bass with low to fairly low action and play directly on top of the fingerboard (ramps are also (or at least should be) radiused to match the fingerboard's radius). It's a very different feel and can make a noticeable difference for certain plucking styles.

Decided to take a shot at trying one, using some Wenge my nephew sent me:

The difference in playing feel is actually fairly minimal on this bass, given the low-ish pickup mounting and my very light, lateral plucking technique. But there are still times when I definitely can tell it's there, and I dig the feel enough to leave it on there for a while and see if it feels like a keeper.
