Here's mine on a Peavey Cirrus 6 string. It's made of ebony and the great thing about the Cirrus pickups are that it's already radiused, so the luthier only had to follow the pickups.
Came out really well and I really "dig" it now.![]()
Then my pickups must not work
With the Bartolinis on my main basses the strings can be dropped down to touch the pickups and while the string would then be stopped from vibrating, that's because it's physically touching the case and has nothing to do with the magnetic pull. If I raise it to just millimeter away from the cover, the string can then vibrate with no ill effects.
So no, that's not how it works... it may be how it can work with some pickups but it's hardly a given. And it's pretty clear that some don't understand how ramps work. They're not dynamically limiting. I can still go from very soft to very loud on any of mine.

I think it's possible, but pickups can definitely vary. A very strong magnetic field should at least in theory be able to slow down vibration and cut sustain. Fortunately, we live in a world where not everything is an absolute. Magnetic strength of pickups can vary!
Passive pickups with a stronger magnetic field can produce a louder sound, whilest active pickups can utilize a weaker magnetic signal and battery power to drive the signal. So, if you place a weaker magnetic signal close to the string, no problemo!
If I remember correctly, magnetic pull is one of those darn physics things that involve the natural log when factoring the magnetic strength vs. distance. Any small distance between the magnet and object will see a sharp decline in the magnetic pull.
