Catching things or sharing germs is not an issue at all, the dogs are not allowed to lay on top of the humans for the reasons that many trainers don't recommend it.
I've had to train from scratch or correct bad habits with all the grown dogs I've taken in, and make them ready for a forever home, which means they must behave beautifully to be accepted/trusted into that potential home.
With the Pit Bull and several other powerful breeds, they don't often get a second chance after behaving badly, they are abandoned or put down, so I really try to make them model citizens.
Allowing them to be in the dominant position in the sleeping place doesn't contribute to poor behavior in most dogs, but it does in some individuals.
There are a number of other habits/routines that are important to be consistent with, to create the correct environment for powerful breed dogs.
A dominant nippy Cocker Spaniel (for instance) is a bit of a nuisance...a nippy dominant Pit Bull/Rottweiler/Mastiff/Doberman/Malamute/Malinois can do a lot of damage fairly easily if they make a mistake.

I tucked everybody in and considered sleeping on the 2 dog beds put together, but I slithered in on her side later, and we all slept horribly
