This goes back twenty years and both of these super lovable guys are gone. The large beagle acting as a cushion was very old and had been blind for years when the little white pup joined our home. The old boy spent all his time in my recliner. The young pup just adored him and never understood why the old guy wouldn't run and play with him. He didn't know the old guy was blind..... One day they both zoomed by me and I was astounded. I hadn't seen my old buddy run since he had lost his eyesight. It was then that I noticed his nose resting on the pups back. The pup had quite literally made himself a seeing eye dog to my old friend. They were inseparable until the day he passed and I am sure that pup added several years to my old buddy's life. I was a blessed man to witness the bond those two created.

I've had to put several dogs down and this is always the battle. One I waited too late because she was still eating until one day she wouldn't. Near the end I was feeding her tripe. The day she turned it down, I knew she was in pain and needed to be put down. Then the guilt. That happens because either way, you participate in ending their life. It's just a bummer all around.

The hardest part about putting a dog down, aside from missing them is the war that goes on in the mind. Am I killing my friend or am I keeping my dog alive because it's hard to say goodbye.
We as a family have gone through that three times now and I still get upset thinking about each and every one. Thinking that same thing, did I make the right decision? I was more upset with the dogs passing than my own parents as they, the dogs, were my responsibility. 😔

That white pup in my photo above started scratching his eye right at the outset of Covid. My vet would only talk to me on the phone and suggested he was suffering with an allergy, so we spent a week giving him Benadryl. A week later his eye turned dark and my vet relented and saw us. Come to find out a fast-growing tumor had formed in the back of his eye and at that point we only had a few days..... Had I known the week before we could have removed his eye and the fast-growing tumor and possibly saved him. I live with that guilt every day. I totally get it.

Sorry to hear that. It sounds like you did the best you could. Still hard to say goodbye.

Some poignant and heartfelt stories above. 💔 I'm sure most of us here have been through the ordeal of having a pet put to sleep (my most recent one was back in October '25). Yes, the guilt of having decided to "do the deed" is always with us, despite us knowing that to let them suffer on because we can't bear to be without them, is unreasonable. The fact is we "do the deed" is precisely BECAUSE we love them so much, but the mind takes a long time to accept this.

For all who recently posted about their loss...my sincere condolences. 🐾🐾
