Just to be perfectly clear, we have not had to sacrifice much to do any of this, we have taken only one extra dog at a time, other than Duke and Duchess.
I had to split them up to get them new homes though, which made me tear up the day I had to hand Duchess off without Duke.
Duke went to a great home though, eventually.
I do it because I love the dogs and they make me feel good, they help my mood, they help with anxiety, anger management, lots of stuff, so it is just as much for me as it is for the dogs.
We had little Boomer for five months, he had no house manners at all when I picked him up off the street.
I cried like a baby when I drove away from the hand off meeting in Waco, I knew the people who were getting him were great people, my wife works with that woman's sister, but little Boomer was like a toddler it seemed, and he stole my heart.
I would have kept him ..but my/our work situation did not allow for two dogs, was trying hard to sell my shops and was insanely busy trying to do what needed done.
Chula worked out really well, my daughter had just split up with her longtime live in boyfriend and was in a new apartment by herself for the first time in a long time. I had her for a week and she became my daughter's dog.....done deal!
We have also not taken that many dogs, I know people who have fostered 60-80 dogs over the years, so I'm small potatoes for sure.
Where I seem to do well (way better than the average foster) is I am very motivated to find them good homes, and I always seem to find them.
Many foster homes tend to collect dogs and end up fostering 7-8 dogs at once and waiting for the rescue organization to find homes for the dogs.
They like me because I take the dog away and they don't need to do anything else, I just find a good home and get them placed, my big mouth works in my favor in that situation, I talk to everybody until I find somebody good who needs a new best friend.

@kesslari...lots of places to eat and drink beer that allow dogs here in Austin, so if you come, Loki can go for a beer too!

I'm pleased that you have a good work/family/dog balance in your life. I've seen too many people take on more than they can handle,and that's not good for anyone, human or animal.
Keep up the good work!

This is Billy, he is a dog we took from the folks at the Austin Animal Shelter after he had been there 358 days.
He was not eating much and was about 15 pounds underweight, he was also growling at visitors who stopped at his kennel.
Two guys from AAS saw me with my boy Loki (in my avatar pic) at a Pitbull fundraising event and brought Billy (they called him Cassidy) to meet Loki and I, and asked if I could help him, somebody had told them that I was a softy and that I could fix this dog.
We took him home and put those 15 pounds back on him quickly and worked on his attitude adjustment.
He was just a bit insecure and needed some confidence building, and soon reverted back to the nice boy that I was pretty sure he was.
This picture is Billy chillin' in his very own water bed at his forever home, his family loves him and spoils him rotten, but also makes sure that he follows the rules, they are good dog owners who had recently lost one of their Mastiffs to cancer.
The second pic is Billy with his forever Mom.
The third pic is Billy with is fat wife. :D
