I'm sure I'm adding nothing to this, but I'd rather listen to Bollocks than almost any "bass chops" album. Whether he could play or not is really beside the point. Bass players are such an insecure bunch (shrug).

Sure, as long as their ignorance is made apparent. It's on everyone to speak up.Abolishing opinions with which one does not agree is a far more dangerous road than opining ignorantly on any group.
We are not the only old men fighting over these valuations
To be clear, he didn’t play on any of ‘Bollocks’, save for a buried take on “Bodies”, which was covered over by Steve Jones.I'm sure I'm adding nothing to this, but I'd rather listen to Bollocks than almost any "bass chops" album. I probably should have made myself more clear. Threads like this and the numerous Jaco threads, and who's better who's best threads always end up the same. People post hate and vitriol and others post love and admiration. Most of the hate and vitriol are not based in reality. Most of the love and admiration are akin to a fawning 13 year-old.Abolishing opinions with which one does not agree is a far more dangerous road than opining ignorantly on any group.

Do we need to argue about Sid Vicious' bass skills and if Jaco is the world's greatest player?
I learned a long time ago around here that arguing and spewing hate and taking replies personally is useless.
I also think you are reading way more into my response than necessary. I feel you are making me out to be some kind of pro-censorship, opinion bashing monger. I'll say this much...I stopped replying to threads for awhile. I now think it's time to stop again.
I made the mistake of replying to this thread. I guess if more of the community stopped replying to these type of threads they would disappear and maybe TalkBass could be a better place. Can't we just talk about the bass? Instead we participate in these threads and argue about subjective topics that really don't matter.
I certainly don't want to walk down this hypothetical dangerous road you alluded to. In fact that comment makes me want to spew hate and vitriol. I'd say much more but hey, I certainly don't want to get reprimanded or banned.
Don't stop posting. What you're saying about subjective topics is spot on.

Sid's image fit the band. They didn't give a rats a@# about his ability to play. And Lydon said in his book Sid was "one of the Johns". They were mates.
I loved that record when it came out. We played it endlessly. Still do listen from time to time.
Sid was the only band member who understood that anarchy doesn’t have a time signature or a downbeat.
The drummer probably knew but kept the beat anyway, and the guitarist was an enabler.
I mean it man!
I’m aware. But it’s all the same ball of wax.To be clear, he didn’t play on any of ‘Bollocks’, save for a buried take on “Bodies”, which was covered over by Steve Jones.
He might have been the only one to not understand it was all art school prankery.

I'd take Lydon's comment to mean Sid was a cipher or role, but Sid himself was dispensible; it seems very insulting.
Well, if you say that Sid could actually play the bass - even though somewhat...badly.., I'll certainly believe you. Personally, the Sex Pistols and their...music, does not (and never did) appeal to me at all, but, that's neither here nor there. I've never heard a note from them - and don't plan to. But, if you say he can play - and have proof (more or less)? Then, so be it...
One thing, though.. Heroin does not - and never has - "set in". Unless somebody holds you down, and sticks needles in your arm - repeatedly - you have to get yourself addicted. Heroin is not the flu - or cancer - which does set in...![]()
I agree that Complete Control is probably my favourite punk song ever. Still a great tune 43 years later.I find that The Clash had limited success with ska, but were pretty good at incorporating all sorts of influences into their music. Their best efforts are always a blend of something and them, as opposed to being true to a style. Plus Complete Control might be the greatest punk song/song ever. The Sex Pistols might have been a force of nature influencing later generations, but The Clash were musically gifted in a way that went well beyond anything the Pistols ever did.
Let's settle this the right way, guys. Vote now!
