Sid Vicious could play the bass

By the way, I think the first proper punk album is 1970's "Fun House" by the Stooges who hailed from Michigan. Yeah, I know it wasn't called punk at the time, but all the evidence is there - the music, the sound, the production, the attitude. There's MC5 too... before that you have all those bands on comps like "Nuggets" and some of them sound 10 years ahead of 1976. Death, Pure Hell, the scene in New York... I know British music was also a influence but I always thought of punk as being a US thing.

I read somewhere that The Ramones wore ripped jeans because they couldn't afford new clothes, while the kids in England ripped theirs as a fashion statement.

All in all it was just a sign of the times on both sides of the pond and beyond, even in communist countries...

Another band around the same time.. where they were from escapes me, is Crime.. very early 70's.. not many have ever heard of them, but really raw and tasty

But also, to me an interesting and important connection is an American band of a few years later. Social Distortion. They (following on the heels of bands like X) had figured out the formula of 50's rock/roots + punk rock ethic and attitude in a way that made so much sense in its connections to me.

Worth noting The Avengers as well. Shared the 50s/rockabilly guitar style with a harder rhythm section (bass played by friend Jimmy Wilsey - RIP - later better known for playing guitar with Chris Isaak) and they opened for the Pistols on their final show at Winterland - and subsequently produced by Steve Jones. Great band IMO.

Also on Social Distortion, circa 1983 I was living in SF. Roommate was Paul Rat (manager of The Dead Kennedys) - Mike Ness' brother crashing on the floor... Interesting times.

Speaking of bad brains

Here's my Frankenstein green monster pseudo Daryl Jenifer tribute bass. This bass has seen some gigs and has the bruises to prove it.

Threads like these should be abolished.

I love how someone can trash a band they never heard...really?

My thoughts....Lydon is a genius, PIL completely brilliant. The Pistols...we wouldn't have had a lot of great bands without them. Watch 24 Hour Party People, that scene with the Pistols gig in Manchester is poetry.

Sid playing bass...who cares.

Abolishing opinions with which one does not agree is a far more dangerous road than opining ignorantly on any group.
