Singer is a Felon

Not to that extreme but I used to play with a drummer who was on probation for drug related offences. Great guy, unique style and he was always on time. Until one week, he wouldn't return our calls and failed to show up to prac. We finally caught wind a week later that he got busted dealing - effectively breaking his probation. Back to jail he went.
If you're not planning on a serious project, and as long as the felony charges aren't too severe (ie. rape, theft or murder) then I say give them a shot. I know a number of people with felony charges who are actually top blokes. A little rough around the edges, but good company nevertheless.
However, if you're serious about your project, consider looking elsewhere. They simply aren't reliable enough to keep on the long-term. As one of my mates' chest tattoos says "Once a crim, always a crim".

The drummer from my last band was a convicted felon. He spent a few years in a state prison. I grew up with the guy so I know he wasn't that bad, he was basically in the wrong situation at the wrong time and got caught for it.
Doing pretty much anything with him when he was on parole was a PITA. His PO called me a few times just to get details on who, what, where, when, and why before he was "allowed" to hang out. They need to know every single detail so they can make a judgement call on whether the parolee is going to flip out and go back to their old ways.

Not in the band but i hired a young guy form a sober house to work construction with me.
Good guy, good worker, but the meeting and random screenings made it impossible.
Got his second ck and tested dirty for coke.
Swears its from energy drinks. I told him to let me know what happens.

Our band's Felon..... well I live in Po dunk town there aint much going on here with musicians. He and the Drummer know their stuff. I'd bet the Drummer is one of the top ten in all of the state. I don't want to waste time with musicians who say they will learn a song and when you try and play it with them they can't do it for whatever reason.
I walked in after learning two of their songs and a cover and we played it much like a band that had been playing together for months. NO tinkering and no BS. Just blew the songs out.
They got my attention and I don't see anything better going on.

Good people do bad things, and bad people do good things. Worry about his general character, not the few things that are outliers.
Here's the rub. If he was an addict and has not ID'd and come to grips with his trigger(s), he will backslide if one of his triggers is tripped. It's possible even if he's aware of his triggers and worked out how they work on him, but if he's not there yet, it is almost certain he will flip from trying real hard to stay clean to trying real hard to score a sack of meth no matter how much his conscious mind is telling him it's a mistake.
I was in a band with a (former) crack addict drummer and my first question after he played and we liked him was what are your triggers? He said he didn't have any and had got clean when he was born again while he was in jail. He got a day job and when he got his first paycheck he disappeared for 3 days, then showed up broke and definitely strung out on something, claiming his mom had fallen ill and he'd had to rush to her side.
It was obvious he'd gone back to his old ways so we replaced him right away. Some months later I ran in to him and he was once again clean and sober, claiming he was truly saved this time and his faith would keep him from harm. A few months later I heard through a mutual friend he'd fallen off the wagon and was back in rehab.
Turned out he had/has a crack addict girlfriend who can turn him just by showing up. He sees her and backslides for a few weeks, then they get in to it because she prostitutes herself to support her habit so he runs back to his faith, gets himself clean, and starts over. He gets back on his feet and starts working, then out of the blue she shows up and...
Until he gets some actual help for his problem(s) or dies, or his crack head GF dies, he's never going to break the cycle he's stuck in.

OP: A few of things you may want to think about ~
1) How long and well does your drummer friend know the singer (did he know the singer before he got busted and did hard time)?
2) How long has the singer been out of the joint (and clean - I‘m assuming you all are clean)?
3) Does the singer have a legal fulltime job? If not, this is a real BIG red flag!!!

The felon band mate had a job about 100 miles away at a resort, he was a manager at t hotel but I am told the PO made him quit over the distance. He was making 30 an hour. Now he has to find work here but it's not sunk in he will never make that in this area. He's looking for work.
Drummer has known him for a number of years. I don't know how long he's been out (I heard at least a year now) and I am sure he's getting some help as mandated by his release terms.
Meth heads relapse, for all I know he has gone through some of that rep lapse process? My nephew relapsed once that was it, been straight ever since.
I don't mess with any drugs. Drummer smokes when he can find it and that is no often.

No, my grandson is the drummer. He is 11, but is going on 25. He better never while I'm alive.
