First time I saw Mudvayne was on the first and only Tattoo The Earth tour....prior to L.D. 50 being released, they kicked ass! After that I saw them at the Pledge of Allegiance tour, and later at the Off-Fest. By the time I saw them on the Off-Fest (prior to the next album release) you could tell Chad's voice was going. The downside of touring hard and abusing your vocal cords I guess. I think the same thing happened to Matt Holt from Nothingface.
I applaud him for continuing to make new music, and music that works with what his voice is at this stage. The stuff he's done in the last ten years is pretty cool, and far removed from LZ.
In addition to him not being able to hit any of his former high register, he seems to just run out of breath a lot. To me there is no shame in a rock screamer who can't hit the same notes he did when he was 20, but if you can't even spit out 3 or 4 words without needing to come up for air....maybe jump on the treadmill or something. He could still sound good in the Mr. Brownstone range if he laid of the cake.
Hard Rock and metal seem to be especially rough on a singers voice. I think what happens to some of these singers is that bad singing technique early in their careers really catches up with them as they get older. An example would be Ozzy, he was never a great live singer but these days he is beyond terrible...he sings horribly out of key, sometimes more then a few steps off and can't come anywhere close to the notes he used to hit.
I guess this is not really that different then bad technique early in someones bass playing causing health problems later in their career.

Last time I saw Peter Gabriel he still sounded fantastic. Though his songs never really seem to tax his vocals.

Let's face it, Father Time is a mean, unforgiving SOB, nothing lasts forever and often with rock stars it is the voice that goes first.
Let's talk about Vocalists who can't cut the cake anymore but used to be awesome in their day.

This shows how he honed his skill as a vocalist over the years but sadly also how much his voice has deteriorated in recent times.
Make no mistake this is a TOUGH song for any vocalist to sing.

The Dolly Dots were a Dutch Girl group which existed from 1978 to 1987 and were everything that the Spice girls would become a decade later, down to the fact that they each had a different character and look. The management of the Spice Girls have since admitted that they simply took the Dolly Dots template and updated it.
But just like with the Spice girls where you can tell that Melanie C. had more vocal talent than the others, the most vocally talented of the six were the ones who sang the most of their songs.
They were: Angela Groothuizen ( The one with the poofed up hair and navy blue top in the picture) who was the Rock Chick of the band and later when the Dolly Dots called it a day went back to singing rock.
But it is the second one who is going to be the subject of this thread. Ria Brieffies (the one on the far left with the yellow jacket.) Brieffies had a voice which was VERY similar to ABBA's Agnetha Faltskog, she had that quality of "I sing it like I lived it" that authenticity which is impossible to fake.
But when the Dolly Dots did their reunion tour in 2007 it became painfully apparent that the years were NOT kind on Brieffies.
So sad, she gives it her all but it just isn't there anymore.
Ria Brieffies died in 2009 of cancer, her band mates carried her casket to the grave with her daughter taking her place as the sixth Dolly Dot.

I thought the same thing but then saw AC/DC on their previous tour, the last of the classic lineup. Brian Johnson sounded great.
yeah, Brian Johnson must have done something because his voice sound a lot better then it did there for a long while. There's a clip of him singing "You Shook Me All Night Long" with Bill Joel at Madison Square Garden and he sounds great.
Same here but then I got used to it. Like an old wine that's turned into sherry. Well, they bottle and sell sherry, too.

Yeah...the tone of Dio's voice changed as he got older but he still sang in tune and with tons of passion so I was ok with it. Like an athlete in his last season, you respect what they've done. Ozzy on the other hand...oh boy, don't get me started on how awful he's been the last so many years.

I actually think Geddy has become a better singer as opposed to a screamer. When he sings the newer Rush stuff like Headlong Flight he sounds good. Not to say he isn't feeling the age, of course, even he admits he can't do back to back nights anymore, but he's aware of his limitations and has gone to lengths to try to take care of himself. On R40 when he sang Anthem and Hemispheres I noticed he sings the parts that he used to scream.
When you see a singer during a performance motion to the audience to join in as the verse approaches a high part...that's proof they've lost a lot...
I can't believe no one has mentioned Don Dokken. My God. Saw him at M3 and a couple other times. It's one thing to try and sing the way you did before and not hit it, but Don doesn't even try to sing the songs like he used to, he sings them like a lounge singer, lol. He was a great singer back in the day and don't expect him to sing like that but geez, not even close to sounding like the songs

Ian Gillan of Deep Purple. I don't expect a 60+ year old guy to be able to scream like he did in his 20's, but his tone is quite whiny now, very painful to listen to live.
