Single 10" speaker for small gigs?

I own a Fender 1x10 Bassman 100. It has worked well for me at practices and small gigs with no drums/very quiet drums. I have used it on upright and electric. It would most likely lack the muscle you need for anything above a very low volume gig.
I did put a Sansamp VT bass pedal in front of it for electric bass and it makes it sit better in the mix for slightly louder things, but it really depends on what you're trying to do.
I like having it around for a quick grab and go, but I wouldn't want it to be my only amp.
I also gig with an ACME B-1 1x10 with an Acoustic Image Clarus amp- for upright acoustic gigs with no drums/very quiet drums.

Depends on the cabinet, but I'd have to agree that in general a single 10" won't work for much other than an "unplugged" or jazz thing. That said, I gigged with an Ashdown ABM-500 head and single EA VL-110 cab for many years, often in fairly loud "pro jam" situations. That is a 3-way cab though, so a little more air to work with. And it certainly would start to lose steam when you got a loud drummer and a couple of guitars going. A pair of them would then work fine.

In general I think a good 1-12 might be a better choice, and a 2-10 is better still.

I've used a Fender Bassman 25 1x10 combo, at 25 watts, for rehearsals and a couple of small/quiet gigs. It'll keep up with a drummer who isn't bashing the hell out of his kit.
