Single Malt Scotch!

It's funny, I had a dram of the Yamazaki exactly 8 years ago. I can tell because on my Facebook feed it shows it as the day I cleaned out my apartment before moving to the East Coast for seven years. I took a break from cleaning to hang out with my upstairs neighbors, who poured me that. I was less experienced with whisky at the time but very much enjoyed it.

Yamazaki 12 is one I try to always keep on hand. I really like the Dalwhinnie too.

I used to take a couple years to go through a bottle, having twenty or so open at a time. Even now that I'm staying with one of my friends they're still lasting at least a month or more. My present bottle of the day is another 15, Highland Park.

Next week on my trip to town I'm hoping to pick up one of my all time favorites, Balvenie 15.

Hrm, only had 3 wee drams that are actually wee so far; don't know that it's up to the point of verdict, but impression, anyway: It's no peat bomb, clearly has some sherry cask to it, pretty smooth for a 10 year old, and I don't get nearly the laundry-list of things perceived or imagined by the online descriptions, but it's decent. My usual go-to is Macallan 12 sherry cask (as an indicator of my taste in scotches - I've met Laphrohaig at a friends and I was happy to be spared the price of a bottle to find out how I feel about that end of the spectrum - when peat meets tarred rope, I don't want to drink it, thanks! Those who do are welcome to it!) I choose not to head off into the $trato$phere where the 18 and up year old stuff lives, the 12 is quite expensive enough.

The purchase was something of a lark based almost entirely on being delighted with the tiny distillery itself, with the spent grains being shoveled out a window into a wagon to be fed to the cows next door, etc. Fortunately, it's pretty decent to my tastes. If you are in Scotland and can only tour a few distilleries, make it one of them. I honestly can't recall any details from tour samples, if there were tour samples on that tour, as it was ~22 years ago.
