As a big time Lagavulin 16 (and especially 12!) fan, should I be going and shopping for one of these?
I think so. I've never had Lagavulin before so I have no idea how it compares. As far as I'm concerned it is a great scotch.
Is Lagavulin usually peaty like Laphroig? This is not peaty at all.
The scotch will take heat a lot better than the wine will. Should be no problems, but just to be sure, you should sample them all.
Start a new thread if you need volunteer scotch checkers.
Lag is peaty for sure, but it's way more balanced than Laphroaig IMO, especially the 10, which to me at least has more of a medicinal quality. All IMO.
Not nearly so much so, but peat is one of the signature tones when considering most anything from Islay. By the way, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Ardbeg (three of the most famous peaty offerings from Islay) are all located within in a mile of the other two.
If you're liking the 8, go find a bottle of the 12 next time you get the chance. Unlike most other scotches, the 12 is actually the premium over the older 16.
I've had a couple of types of Laphroig and Ardbeg before. Good stuff.
I was eyeing the 16 on the store today but it was too expensive for me.
Both have been known to cause my wife to leave the room.
The 16 is spendy, and the 12 even moreso.
If you like Ardbeg you may want to check out the new offering from them called Ardbeg An Oa. Picked up a bottle the other day and reeeeeaaally enjoying it!

You've got to try the 12! I always keep Lagavulin 16 on hand, but the 12 is for when you really deserve the best, and it's not all that much more either.
Having a sip of the new Ardbeg An Oa. Very nice indeed.

I happen to have a bottle of that on hand, as well. Also, the 8-year, 200th anniversary, and a couple versions of the Distiller's Edition.
I put the 16 first, and the 12-year cask strength a close 2nd, though sometimes I do definitely favor the 12.
As a full on Lagavulin fan, how do you feel about the 8? Do you reccommend it to 16 fans?
Regarding the 16>12, that works out well that the less expensive of the two is your favorite. I only bought the Distillers Edition once and decided I'd rather spend a little more and get the 12. That said, I've never had anything bad from Lagavulin.
Played near Juneau a few years ago and they had an unopened bottle of Lagavulin 16 which made a lot of converts! I had the bartender open it from the first drink a customer bought me, and enough of the customers got curious about what I was drinking to the point that the bottle didn't make it through the night, and I think I only had about four of the drinks poured from it!

Actually, I would definitely recommend the 8 to both 16 and 12 fans. It resides in between the two, to an extent, though I consistently prefer both the 16 and the 12 to the 8 (but again, while I favor the 16 most of the time, sometimes my taste buds get in a mood where the 12 trips my fancy more so than the 16). The Distiller's Editions are nice, but in all honesty, I have very consistently preferred the standard 16 (which is less expensive).

Same results for me. Just an aside, but a couple years ago when I had the 16, Distillers Edition and 12, I also had another unexpected bottle that fit the Lagavulin flavor profile that still amazes me to this day. A bottle of Laphroaig Cairdeas! Everyone that sampled from that selection agreed that the Cairdeas belonged with the Lagavulin's and had nothing in common with the Laphroaig 10 or Quarter Cask!
