Don't know if you're aware of the Taketsuru 17 but it was one of the most popular bottles in Japan until it became unobtainable. Even rarer than that was the extremely limited edition of the same bottle, in non-chill filtered version, and I've got a bottle of it available if you're interested.

I agree, but Makers Mark 46, much better!

Yamazaki 12 is one of my always on hand bottles too. Along with Hibiki 17, 30, Taketsuru 17, 21, Hakushu 10 and Ichiro's Malt Winewood Reserve, my favorite Japanese selections

Right now I'm very much enjoying the Tullibardine 20. I'm enjoying it a bit too much... at $150/bottle, it's not one I should be drinking a dram of nearly daily :-/. Right behind it are a trio - the Aberlour 12, Yamazaki 12, and Bunnahabhain 18.

Highland Park makes a stiff scotch, remember it's for sipping.

The Highland Park is a nice balanced scotch, a little smoky but not overwhelming at all. I'd like to try the 18 yo some time, but in general haven't graduated to the older stuff yet :). The other two aren't seen much around these parts.

So, as luck would have it, while my friend and I were cruising around Huntington Beach, we stopped at a restaurant/bar a block away from Main St, and found this guy at the bar:

Having been told that this distiller was something I would enjoy, I happily bought a dram.

It honestly tasted a lot like Glenfiddich. Not really very exciting, but not bad by any means. This is the un-peated version. Given that I enjoy a bit of smokiness in scotch, this one didn't wow me, but even imagining some peat on top of the flavor profile of this whiskey, I don't really see it being a favorite of mine.

with that in mind, I think I'll forego a purchase of the Port Charlotte line in the immediate future, and instead go for the Highland Park and/or the Talisker 10.

I got a bottle as a gift - we're talking rye whiskey now - I thought it very good, but then I got a gander at the price. ...not what I'd call a great value. But then there aren't many bottles I'll gladly pay $89 for. YMMV.

The Bowmore Darkest has more pronounced flavors of dark fruits than sherry to my taste at least when compared to Bunnahabhain 12.

This is a great review:

PS Don't go to BevMo, they are no bargain. Try to get to a Total Wine, they completely undersell BevMo.
