The down side is that I checked all of my PayPal receipts since I started with single malts on 2/28/18....especially if you’re actually trying to make $$’s at this activity.
Yikes! It's been a fun, but a pretty pricey experiment, not at all like my younger PBL 16 ouncer days.

I feel sorry for you younger guys. There just aren't many steady five and six night gigs anymore. In the sixties and seventies, I was always working. Not much bread, $25 a night quite often, but I never felt poor. But I often played with guys like Joe Farrell, Pete Yellin, and Al Grey who were also getting $25. The difference was I was working steady and they were between name jazz gigs.
I wish I were a younger guy! I too played 6 nights/wk late '60's, early '70's. Sometimes 6 nights, 10 pm - 4 am in the City. No need to feel sorry, enjoy what's left. I've earned that shot 'o whisky!
Yep, 10 - 4 am the NJ regulars came over for a " nightcap."
I worked many years at Jilly's.
I wonder if we ever bumped into each other. Remember Bucy Calabrese? He got more bass players gigs than anyone I ever knew. Sweet guy.
I tried Suntory today. Is it a scotch? I guess they can't use the name. It is pretty good as you say.
I put off Glenfiddich because of the "insipid" comments in the posts above. However, I bought a bottle of 14 year GLenfiddich the other day and was pleasantly surprised. I think it's very good. I also don't see anything wrong with the triangular bottle. One scotch I tried had a pitch black bottle. It was a pain since you can't see how much you have drunkCool - love the reference. Tell you what, I'll swap you my empty GF bottle for a full Glenlivet
Yes. As someone previously said, I think Glenfidditch can fend for itself. My next purchase will be the lagavulin if I decide to invest $79.00. Yikes!
I too found Glenfiddich pleasant, though my experience is still limited to the 12 yo. I find it a cut above the blends and blended malts I've tried. On the way to Lagavulin I picked up some Ardbeg 10 yo, their basic model. I think it's very good, on a par (to me) with Laphroig 1/4-cask, and very much a value at half the price of Lagavulin. I recommend it as a stop along the way if you're still trying Islay malts on for size.

Thx for starting this thread. I’ve appreciated it as i’ve gained experience with single malts. Funny, you started out with Glenmorangie 10, and wondered if it was typical. I finally got around to it and can assure you it’s actually very good! Thx for starting this thread and slainte to you!

For Macallan fans, their 60 yr old single malt just sold at auction for $1.1 million. I feel better about my whiskey spendings already!

Funny. In the Shameless episode mentioned above, the father, Wm Macy and a dying woman doctor buy a similar bottle of Macallan for $100,100.00. Must be a coincidence? LOL

I decided to try Maker's Mark bourbon after noticing the fancy bottle at the state store here in PA.
Never do that again!
it took me over 10 minutes to get the damned bottle open. The fancy, fake wax seal is nearly impenetrable. I think they color it red to cover up any blood that may be let. I really was concerned that I'd lose a digit with the paring knife I was using. My chain saw was out of gas and in the barn.
I don't know what marketing wizard came up with the seal and the cheap twist cap. They must think they're bottling plutonium.

Ok, so it took four more years of maturing taste to come around, but I now consider Glen 12 a staple. As for Glenfiddich, well, insipid may still be a bit harsh, but then I haven’t had any for quite a while, so…
.
So I bought a new small cable bag yesterday. Kind of pricey, but it came with a free bottle of one of my favorite single malts .....
