A regular nut gets slotted down to fret level. Some people leave it highter, but it shouldn't in theory be necessary, and also will contribute to worse intonation.

A "nut" that is used as a string separator behind a zero fret must be somewhat lower than the frets, so that you get some break angle over the zero fret, similar to if you were fretting it back there.

slowly getting more work done. tonight, i screwed on the bridge, and drilled for the tuner screws. i put an E string on to test the unplugged volume, and its about 1/3 that of an upright bass. I had to raise the saddle a lot though. I have a lot of tweaking to go, as far as fret/neck leveling, and then i probably will have to shim up the bridge tray a bit. I'm glad i didn't glue it in yet.
I drilled the tuner screws with a hand drill. It went fine until the last tuner. I drill the first hole, and accidently sent it all the way through. then, the drill bit snapped before i could get the final 3 holes. Its not a big deal. The bass itself is made of little flaws, so the hole don't bother me. I need to buy a new bit though. Its good that something stopped me. Its 2am, and i have school tomorrow! lol
