Thanx man. while i was working out how much i would need to raise the bridge, I got a good idea, for a wooden bridge tray, instead of just shims. I also got the bridge pup routed (not perfect though. needs a touching up), and a start to routing the neck pup. I also drilled holes for the pots, and counter sunk them, did the same for the strap buttons and pup screw holes, and finally got the control cavity cover screwed on, and shaped with the body. I did all of this with the help of jensby_design.

Here is the bridge tray. I started with the bloodwood base, and added scrap that were the tickness of the parts of the bridge back and sides. Then i just rounded the corners, and contoured it a bit. I still need to contersink and glue it into the body. I like this idea, and i plan to use it from now on, when I use mechanical bridges.

thanx. If you want any tips, ask, and i'll see if i can be any help. the biggest pains i have come across in this involved sides not staying level and square, too thick of a neck, and the fb width and neck width being slightly off. this is why a master template is better than a straight edge for routing out the shape.

I have been toying with the idea of dying just the mahogany core of the wings to a walnut-like brown. Was wondering your guys' thoughts on it. I would also seal the top and back with krazy glue, seal off the core layer and maybe the neck with laquer, then go over the whole bass with satin poly.
the main things left, are finishing the pickup routing, and shaping the hugely thick neck (I butched the neck on my first build. I refuse to try again without someone experienced to help avoid this), and then all there is left is shaping and installing the nut, final shaping, finish sanding, and then go through the finishing process.

One of the main last things to do is to instal and slot the nut. The nut is brass. Do i just superglue it in or what? Also I am a bit worried about slotting it. There is a zero fret, so it just needs to be a decent spacer for the 8 strings. Any idea on how i can easily slot the brass? same for the bridge saddles?

today i routed the neck pup cavity. I tried a simpler method of making templates thats gave me a perfect cavity. i'll go more into that later. pics soon

LOL. I'm not to good at playing, but i do like building. you can play for soundclips.
Quick question, how high do the saddles need to be set compared to the fret height for proper action? (i clamped on the bridge and put a string on, but it just rested right on the frets.)

Not an insane amount of progress.... Either way, it is almost done. On the lower wing, where there was wood filler, i sanded 2 flats and glued on some scrap i had. also did that around the arm contour, but it doesn't look good there.
I found out that the brass nut i have isn't tall enough, so i get to make a funky holder from scrapwood. Aside from that, i need to drill for the tuners and bridge. I need to level the fingerboard at the end (for some stupid reason the last 5 or 6 frets are noticeable higher then the rest. It was level when i fretted it...) I found out that the bridge tray is too low, so i just need to glue thin layers to the bottom, until it gets high enough. After all that, i still need to slot the nut/bridge, and give it a test play, then i get to do finish sanding, finishing, and wiring.

I should probably stop hanging around on Luthier's Corner... With each topic I see, it makes me want to build a bass more and more when I finish uni, and this is no exception, this bass is really cool. (It's making me want to make it a chambered build, assuming I get round to it).

Jordan, that bass is cool as hell. I hope you enjoy playing it.
