Sinus, Allergy, Breathing Issues...

Aight, people! Line up and tell your stories and cures! :bawl:

I have really bad allergies throughout the year, I only breath through one nostril at a time (funny how my body will clog one up and use the other, but I have no say so in which side).... I have been using a saline spray that kind of helps, but on fight/sparring days, I really have no choice - I have to use Afrin for just one day, maybe two days out of the week. I don't like using Afrin because it's just not good for you.

:(

Smoking may be bad, but a co-worker once said that menthols will heal you...lol. Anyway, I use Flonase when my sinuses act up and Singulair as I need it. They both seem to work really well for me, I don't know if you've used them or not, but maybe you should check them out.

Man, I live in Central CA and it is an allergy hell here. I have pressure and headaches year round. The only things that work all make me feel like crap, I have tried ALL and I do mean all of the OTC stuff, Flonase, Naseral, Nasonex, Claritin, and nothing works for more than a few weeks. I've been this way for over 15 years now, You get used to it.

I use saline spray. I've found it more effective to add a fair amount of salt, till it :crying: burns...think sea water  . Medication-wise, steroid nasal sprays used regularly help me also. You need a perscription, but at least Flonase is available in generic. For worse periods I add generic claritin (a half pill works fine for me) if I need it. Good ol' fashioned Benadryl (one works for me) works well but feels awful, I use it before bed sometimes. 3-4 Ibuprofen (1200-1600mg) have a significant anti-inflammatory effect and can really calm down my sinuses. BUT it can trash your stomach and inhibit blood-clotting, probably shouldn't do this w/o talking to a medical person about your risk factors.

I take 2 claritin a day (generic...something like 15 bucks for 80) when it's bad (one morning, one night - doctor suggested it) plus a nasal steroid like Rhinocort or Nasacort. Those two things together have really helped to check my allergies.

Singulair is supposed to be good for recurrent allergies.. You might talk to your doc about trying that.

I just found my prescription of Fexofenadine in my pill cabinet.. i think that was the one that really worked, but made me feel funny.

Big plus on the neti pot... they are selling those at Walgreens now! I need to run and get one...

After training, I took a deep breath, held it, put my head back, and filled one nostril (and i guess my sinus area) full of saline solution - pinched my nostril together and put my head back to regular position. I let is sit in there for a while... repeated and then did the other nostril. Worked great, but I'm sure it's not a end all solution or an overnight miracle... It did help alot...

Does anyone have the inability to wear contacts because of allergies? I've been taking Allegra for a while and it's helped most of my symptoms, but whenever I wear contacts (and sometimes even when I don't) my eyes start burning and I usually have to them out after a while. Keep in mind my eyes are most of the time red, itchy and burning to begin with though.

I would look into some other allergy medicine. It should be able to help with your eyes too.

I like to stick to "natural" remedies whenever possible, but a lot of them just plain don't work IME. However I have had fairly good results from "Aller-Leaf" by Gaia Herbs. The recipe is not so different from many other natural allergy formulas (eyebright, skullcap, goldenseal, nettle, etc.), but for some reason this particular brand really works for me. It seems to work as well as Claritin, but without messing up my sleep.

If the allergies are keeping me awake, however, I take a Benadryl.

It's about time I tried a neti pot... I've been a wuss about them so far, but every report I hear is they work better than any meds.
