Gotta get in on the fun here as a fellow Sire enthusiest! 2ndGen P7 5St White Alder player here.
Searching the thread for anyone that's found after-market pickguards for these, but to no avail. Any leads on that - I like to dress my girl.upndofferently for different occasions, and am DEF dying for a mint pickguard to put on this one! CHEERS!

So, previously I asked about flatwounds and someone suggested trying Thomastik. I was a little hesitant as I like a little tension and usually play 45-105 +135 with roundwounds. But, I decided to order a set of JF244 just to see what all the hype was about. Immediately after installing them on a P7 I had to loosen the truss rod as I had Chromes on before. They are still a little sticky and I may wipe them down with denatured alcohol. Onto the sound...

They sound somewhat like dead roundwounds. It's cool to have a little rasp when digging in, and then a nice mellow tone when playing normally. I think I have to break them in for a few months to see if that old school tone comes out. But, I think they will be versatile in tone sculpting.

As for the floppy tension, I wouldn't call then floppy, and they seem to have around the same tension as 45-100 roundwounds. I think they play just fine. I will leave my Chromes on my P7-5 as the B string really sounds great and overall the Chromes are a perfect match for the P7-5 and the music I play (jazz fusion).

I posted in this thread when I got it and when I replaced the plastic knobs with aluminum ones.. but I'm coming up on having owned my 5 string Sire P7 with a swamp ash body for 5 months

I just put it down andI love this bass. The rounded edges on the neck + binding... the body contouring that makes it slim. The way the neck feels in my hands. The beefy pre-amp and the option to not use it.

Yummy P-bass tone from the P pickup.. my new years resolution was to learn to slap and this is the bass I've been learning to do it on.. favor the bridge pickup just a little bit to lessen some of that Boomy p-tone, boost the lows and highs a tad, cut the mids a tad, and I'm enjoying the Slap tone and it doesn't sound bad for fingerstyle either, though I usually boost mids and cut treble just a little bit for finger style. I'm pondering a pickup upgrade for something more balanced in volume levels between the pickups.. but truth be told it's not "Necessity".. I constantly bounce between pickups or blend them, and enjoy them, the P pickup just seems a tad louder than the J.

Tone knob functioning whether using the pre-amp or not is yummy as well.

If I had a grand in my pocket - I'd be really tempted to order a 5 string v7 - fretless, swamp ash.. white blonde.. maybe the vintage version for the black PG.

I'd use the change from that to buy a couple packs of strings. ;)

Anyway - felt an urge to share the admiration I'm feeling for my P7. Urge satisfied.

agreed! My wife got me the P7 5 string last Christmas and it's become my go to bass. The neck binding is top notch, bass plays and sounds top notch for a $700 bass. My Lakland from 2004 is starting to feel lonely!

Only complaint is the tuners, they are awful! Ratio is tiny- a fractional turn equals a large post movement, very hard to get perfectly tuned. My bro got me some hipshot replacement tuners for Xmas this year (we play in a band together) but unfortunately got the HB2's. I've got to call hipshot and see what the correct replacements are, then I'll be in business.

Anyone know for sure whether it's HB1's? My caliper battery is dead, but it looks like a similar back plate vs the HB2's large square.

You might try lowering the P pickup and raising the J to get a better balance. You'd be surprised what a few mm can do!

If I raised the J pick up any more the strings would hit it every note i played. The P is pretty low comparitively. :) Thanks for offering to help and all, but I was just pointing out a minor complaint, which I get around just fine, in what has overall been a fantastic bass.

afaik there are not direct drop in replacements for gen 2 sires. Any replacement will require some drilling and/or filling. Hipshot discontinued their direct drop ins for Sire gen 1 because Sire changed the mounting pattern for gen 2 tuners. Best we can do is match the size of the tuning posts to the holes.

I don't think it will ever happen as Sire uses the same preamp on all its basses and the preamp is configured for 2 pickups. I suggest scouring the used ads for a 1st gen P7. Having the Sire preamp under a P pickup is sound nirvana...

I wasn't talking about a single pickup version . I was just talking about a P3 bass like the P7 they have now , like the difference between my V3 5 and the V7 5s . Just a more affordable bass than the P7 .

My bad, I was thinking about previous conversations about Sire producing a single pickup P bass. I too thought a simple P Bass would be great, but later realized that all Sire basses revolve around the same preamp.
