I'm somewhat surprised he plays a H7V (that's the P90 model) instead of a H7 with humbuckers... I thought his legendary ES335 has humbuckers, as well.
And he mentions a T3 and not the T7 with more features... (Of course, he might use those, too, and H7V and S3/T3 are just the newest models and need some focus... Or it's just the vibe and sound he really prefers no matter whether it's the entry level or midrange model?
)

I couldn't help myself. I can never leave well enough alone.
I love the way my Sire bass resonates acoustically. It is just as lively as my Moon JB5 bass ( my other Favorite one) which has Nordies/Bart pre in the 60s configuration. That bass is completely dialed in. But for me, the Sire, in spite of the many controls wasn't quite doing it for me.
I have several J basses ( including a 1974 Fender) all have EMG pickups and a BTS EQ system.
I tried to warm up to the Sire Electronics. But when I plugged in an EMG bass after the Sire, there just was no question. I had to do it.
It wasn't as simple as I was hoping for. I needed to route out the pickup cavity 1/4" deeper and also make more space in the electronics cavity so it was definitely a irreversible commitment and kind of a gamble..
But the mod absolutely gave me what I wanted and mo 60 cycle hum.. Here's a pic

That is why I like my P5, no sire preamp. Had 3 other ones and never liked the stock preamps.
I happen to like the Sire preamp myself, but it's not for everyone, kind of a love/hate thing. I'm glad you found an alternative that lets the Sire fill your needs! They're cheap enough to use as a modding platform, I tend to forget that, since I like them well enough stock (mostly, I have done minor tweaks).
So my M7 should be here on Monday, not bad coming from Germany.
I think I read somewhere these use super long scale strings, at least the fiver does.
Guess I have to keep that in mind when ordering new strings.

I think that may be only for string though body. I have standard (34") scale strings on my M7 fiver strung through bridge.

After having a real scare at an outdoor festival gig last summer and having several festival and other outdoor gigs already scheduled this summer, I've been considering a reasonably priced bass to use when conditions make me reluctant to take my better basses.
I'm a big Stingray fan and have two already. Based on that, I really expected to get a Sterling by Musicman Ray5HH. But I also thought it could be fun to get something different from what I already have. So I thought:
- I have all active basses except for a short scale semihollow, so I started leaning toward a passive bass.
- I was trying to find a PJ, but wasn't able to find any in stores near here or online that I could get in time for our next festival gig in two weeks. Bummer, a Yamaha BB435 looked pretty good
- I liked the idea of a P, but I also wanted some flexibility since I'm used to basses with a lot of tonal options. So I started leaning toward a passive J.
- I LOVE bursts and was hoping I could find one that I liked
- So that put Sire on my radar.
- I kind of wanted a maple neck since all but one of my basses are rosewood. But I couldn't find a maple necked bass that I could get in time.
- But I found a rosewood that looked dark enough to almost be ebony and I've never had an ebony, or any fretboard that's that dark. Seemed acceptable.
Done. It was a little more than I wanted to spend for what may be just a backup bass, but I'm pretty satisfied with my decision. I just ordered this hottie, a V5R in Tobacco Burst:
I may replace the pickguard with a white pearl to better highlight the blocks, but I'm going to do anything just yet. I just want to get it and play it.

Yeah, some folks don't like the complexity of the preamp, it's almost too powerful - overwhelming to those who like to keep things simple. "With Great Power comes Great Responsibility" hehe...Yeah, that's what he said he's going to do.

Not complexity, just don't like the freqencies on it. I would like to try a passive jazz 5 like the one dave640 ordered.

I'm certainly open to this new bass giving me generic Sire GAS once it gets delivered and I can play it out a few times. To be honest, I hope it does give me GAS. That would mean I made a great choice.
