Getting a new bass with a perfect setup right out of the box is pure luck. It may have been perfectly set up when it was boxed, but after shipping and being exposed to who knows what heat/cold and weather conditions, if it's still perfectly set up it's serendipity.
Having a jack quit indicates a faulty jack. It happens, but will be covered under warranty.
