Small drone with camera hovering outside my window today.

This morning I heard a buzzing sound outside of my window. I looked out and there was a small drone hovering in a stationary position about 100 feet away. My house is perched on a steep hillside so the drone was level with my windows. I got two phone calls from my neighbors who also witness the drone and they were pretty upset about it. One of the neighbors said he saw a Go Pro camera mounted to the bottom of the drone and is really pissed off as he thinks it is an invasion of our privacy. I know we don't own the airspace above our homes so there is little that we can legally do about it. I think the drone might be owned by the guy who lives on the hillside above me. I have seen him fly RC gliders before. Not sure if I should go and have a talk with him or not. My other neighbor who knows him well says he is a first class jerk and I would be wasting my time. I guess flying drones are going to be the way of the future so we might have to get use to them. What do you think?
It would have been much more funny if it was a small gnome with a camera hovering outside your window.

You could build your own mini RPG using bottle rockets, roman candles or "artillery shell" fireworks...that would be cool.

Or just get your own drone and use it to follow his wife everywhere and film in their windows, then post it on a website for voyeurs or something.

She'll take care of his drone for you then.

This morning I heard a buzzing sound outside of my window. I looked out and there was a small drone hovering in a stationary position about 100 feet away. My house is perched on a steep hillside so the drone was level with my windows but still about 50 feet above ground level. I got two phone calls from my neighbors who also witness the drone and they were pretty upset about it. One of the neighbors said he saw a Go Pro type camera mounted to the bottom of the drone and is really pissed off as he thinks it is an invasion of our privacy. I know we don't own the airspace above our homes so there is little that we can legally do about it. I think the drone might be owned by the guy who lives on the hillside above me. have a chat with him anyhow.....maybe even a registered letter.....a letter to the county.....all that fun stuff....even if they do nothing,it's on record just in case you later decide on the 12 ga solution.....

Dear people talking about using an RF Jammer to block the signal: stop. Jamming doesn't work like that, unless you want your electricity bill to take a sharp surge upward. It's a pain in the butt to implement effectively, and it's kinda like using a Sawzall to cut a cast - it can be done, but there's a lot of risk involved and very few folks have the capability to do it properly. Additionally, RF Jamming in the US is a Federal crime: Invalid Link Removed . - The Military Radio Technician who also worked with jamming equipment.

Now, if you have an idea of the frequency band and the control methods the drone is operating under, there's nothing wrong with having a Crosstalk issue and having the bird become an unfortunate lawn dart.

Bad news: GoPro cameras can stream video over WiFi, but it's kind of a kludge to do it and so the chance of the camera being streamed is probably 50/50.

Peace,
Greg

I don't have any shade or blinds on that side of the house. My house is kind of unique. It is on a steep hillside where no can see in the windows. (except a drone) I don't want to go out and spend a few grand on shades just so a flying drone won't be able to see in. Also. I have a nice view of the ocean and city that I don't want to cover up.
Yeah, that sounds pretty rough. 1st world problems. I hope you can recover from the trauma.

It is annoying for sure, but exactly what laws are potentially being broken?

I haven't read Febs link yet. I'm assuming it'd fall under something like paparazzi photographing/interviewing movie actors and stuff. Can basically photograph anything the camera can see when it's not trespassing. I also assume it'd fall under some harrasment, stalking, or peeping tom type stuff if it's recording what's going on in peoples private homes or repeatedly filming folks on private property, etc.

Personally, I don't much care, if one's spying on us, it's coming down. The jury likely wouldn't want one spying on them either, so, nullification.

why should you be the one that has to do that.....what you do in your home is your biz.....the clown with a drone messin' with that should be altering his behavior, not homeowners....
If someone has a telephoto lens on a camera or binoculars it the same thing. I don't do things in front of open windows that I don't want anybody to see. Period. I don't care if it's on PCH or the view of the dump. If my window is open, as it often is, I wave as the neighbors stroll by. I don't care if they see me playing xbox, watching tv, or practicing bass.

You cannot use the gopro wifi connection while flying any RC aircraft. The gopro wifi is 2.4ghz connection and has about a 10 second delay. 99% of RC transmitters being used are also 2.4hz now. If you take off with a gopro with the wifi turned on you will crash. Pilots have to be extra careful to disable the wifi before flight since the gopro and the receiver are usually fairly close together. Even if it operated on a different frequency the lag time makes wifi FPV flight impossible. It is possible to use an outboard transmitter on 5.8ghz or 1.2ghz and a slew of others but you won't see amateur pilots doing this.

As for invading your privacy - There are hundreds of super high resolution cameras in orbit 24hours a day that can zoom in and read the smallest print on your bumper stickers. These "drones" (thanks mainstream media) can only stay in the air for 10-25 minutes with the extra weight of video gear. If your neighbor is a jerk that just sucks in general. If he's flying responsibly there's nothing anyone can do. The FAA doesn't have any set of actual rules for small unmanned RC aircraft and local PD would have to start arresting 8 year old kids flying ARdrones in their front yards. My point is there are many experienced responsible pilots that have been doing aerial photography as a hobby since before digital cameras or wifi even existed.

Whip open the window and play soldier - problem solved.
