SMB-35 Simpson Scroll Bass project

I glued the birch plywood back on the pickup test body and routed the shape and the F holes, The top is gluing on now.

The original Ampegs had a magnetic pickup in a cavity under a 5"x5" plate of .018 spring steel. This is the same way the Highlander Tricone pickup works. The design is an old one that predates piezos.
I am just using a P-bass pickup as an experiment. I read that if the mechanical setup was correct that pretty much any pickup would work. I may eventually have some would or wind my own.

It works !!!! :hyper: :bassist:

I took the electronics from the donor P-Bass and mounted them on a scrap of pickguard material and cut 2 pieces of spring steel to cover the pickup cavity and strung it up with some cheap long scale strings and holy cow.. it works... now onward to the real builds...

Very similar but the real builds will look pretty much like an Ampeg scroll bass. The bodies and necks are going to be curly maple with ebony fretboards. I am planning on a magnetic pickup in the middle along with the under bridge mystery pickup.

it works.... great job.

i highly recommend a blend pot so you can add as much or as little of the mystery pickup as you need. As the owner of 2 aub's and Bruce johnson #70 the difference in the magnetic pup versus the mystery is too dramatic to be just an "and or"....

I am probably going to use 2 volume and 2 tone that way any combination of pickup mix is available with a seperate tone adjustment for each pickup. The blend pot decreases the neck as the bridge is increased and you can't get 100% neck and 40% bridge like you can with 2 volumes... But I might expeiment with a blend before I decide... That would be 1 less knob...

You can if it's the right kind of blend pot.
