Smoking bans in US

1) Supermarket processed food already has these labels.

2) If I have a problem with my school's food I take it to my school.

The individual school can't do anything about it. (unless it's a private school, but most private schools use the same suppliers)

The school boards make those decisions and they will go with the lowest bidder.

If by some miracle the entire citizenry stood up and said "change it". The school board would acquiesce, but inform the citizens that higher property tax would be need to pay for the better quality food and the "concerned citizens" would suddenly vanish.

OK, so I take it to the District or the County or the local authority in charge of lunches.

Or send my kid there with something from home.

There are ways.

Like I said, If by some miracle the entire citizenry stood up and said "change it". The school board would acquiesce, but inform the citizens that higher property tax would be need to pay for the better quality food and the "concerned citizens" would suddenly vanish.

I eat "unhealthy" food as an occasional treat to myself because I like it, I'm an adult, and I don't appreciate others imposing their food morality on me.

:)

I agree with you on that. I'm not in favor of restricting certain foods (i.e. large soda bans), but I would fully support measures that increase the availability of healthier options at a reasonable price.

GOSH!!

That sounds just like a free-market solution.

Oh, OK.

Nothing can be done.

We are all doomed!!

Article in today's paper - our entire downtown (about 8 blocks) will soon become a no-smoking zone. inside, outside, alleys, doesn't matter.

I'm OK with that. Smoking is a very expensive addiction (don't fool yourself, it's really an addiction) that costs billions in medical bills (that we all pay for) and costs thousands of lives every year.

Next thing you know I can't have a slice of pumpkin pie once in a while.
You've been eating pumpkin pie recently? Hmmmmmmmmm.......!!!!!

In the US (well at least Portland) tobacco smoke is quickly being fazed out for marijuana smoke. Marijuana was just legalized this year and it is now illegal to smoke in city parks in Portland (and it was almost passed for all state parks). Will it make a difference? No, either way there is still second hand smoke, though I don't think weed is as dangerous as tobacco?

Depends on who you ask. Some will tell you tobacco has many more deadly chemicals. Others will say weed has much more tar and crap and is worse for your lungs. Oh and that THC stuff which makes you act weird.

OK. So...

The bad thing is that the .gov now has a vested interest in keeping people smoking.

The Master Settlement Agreement with Big Tobacco has them giving the government in the neighborhood of $10 BILLION per year. The ostensible purpose was to fund anti-smoking campaigns and awareness.

The Feds, after skimming overhead to fuel their bureaucracy sends the remaining money out the 46 participating states. Most states haven't used it for the stated purpose, instead squandering it the way governments normally do - to buy votes.

Several states (most, actually) have issued bonds against anticipated future payments from the MSA. In some cases at pennies on the dollar.

Vaping is now cutting into tobacco sales. It's being demonized with junk science and lies in order to keep people smoking, or, literally dying to pay tobacco taxes.

When people talk about not having healthy choices for lunch at work or bemoaning school food, my first thought is "PACK!!"

We packed for our kids until they were in high school. Did they like it? No, but their mom is like that... she'll make sure they get a decent lunch instead of being dependent on big government to parent for her.

I still pack my lunch every day. It's not much different than what working people have been eating for lunch for 100 years.

If you don't want to eat unhealthy industrial glop, pack whatever you want! It's not that hard, and it's cheaper and faster once you spend a few minutes in the morning. And it's a lot easier to control your portion size when you pack in the morning instead of ordering that supersize combo that makes you droool after you've been working all morning.
