Smoking insanity

No offence , and I understand about not wanting to be a jerk but... Do you drink soda and eat fast food? Obesity is almost epidemic in this country. How about raising the tax on sugary fatty food to 30 to 50% overnight. It's always easy to shrug when it's the other guy taking a hit.

I would support a sin tax on those items. We're subsidizing toe amputation with our current structure.

As mentioned, we've had those "rules" here for many years, and the price keeps going up. They (the gov't.) know we're addicts that will pay any price for our chosen poison. (Alcohol, also) I remember going to Shoppers Drug Mart, and getting a carton for <$20. That was stopped. There is a store near me that used to have a sign, "cheapest cigarette prices in town", the had to cover the "bad" word.
And now, with vaping becoming popular, they're trying to figure out how to tax (and regulate) the daylights out of the juice.
Any addiction is fair game to tax, tax, tax. :spit:

That would be terrible if they had a captive market and they were simply exploiting it.

Except the opposite is true. Raising prices decreases the number of cigarettes sold. And there are any number of anti smoking methods available to help you free yourself from the "government's addiction abuse", even though clearly the tobacco industry is truly the one exploiting you.

Yeah, if you smoke, or vape, you're the bad guy.

@ Unrepresented.
Check things out, and you will find the gov't coffers get a lot of $$ from "sin" taxes. If every smoker and drinker ever just up and quit, they would miss that income, no matter what they may say it's used for.

They'd probably make up for it with a healthier population that would cost less in medical expenses and be able to work longer and pay more income taxes.

I wonder when it will get to potato chips or Big Macs. It's just a matter of time when big brother decides what is best for us all....

If we really valued our health, we'd all be one step ahead of Big Gov and their mandated regulations.
I quit smoking last September, so this price increase really doesnt effect me.
I stopped eating crappy food started growing my own. They can tax the hell out of Big Macs all they like as far as Im concerned.

That sucks for smokers, and it also sucks that smoking-related health issues are covered by insurance, Medicare, etc.

Instead of discouraging smoking through taxation and regulations, individuals should be allowed to make their own decisions but also should assume all risks that may result.

I take it you don't know many smokers. ;)

If they paid their way with healthcare and didn't treat the planet like their personal ashtray, I might give them the benefit of the doubt. Smokers tend to not value their health and don't care who picks up the tab.

It's 1984 if the government tells us to be healthy, it's Brave New World if our consumption culture keeps us all so complacent and stupid that we eat ourselves to death.

I guess I'd rather have the former than the latter.
