But it's everyone's business if your habit costs the rest of us. I have no issue with recouping the costs through taxes.
True story, my mother in law sent my wife and I to the store one time when we were first dating to buy her Primatine tablets and a carton of butts.But, I digress.
As far as the taxes, I feel for you, my New England brother. Come up to NH and buy them! Did they up the on tax e-cigs too? A much nicer way to enjoy some nicotine, IMHO. What about hiking the tax on booze? Do the law makers have an issue with alcohol too? I say equality all around on vices.

I've been doing some digging and found some interesting info concerning smokers having a LOWER lifetime healthcare costs than non-smokers due a 10 year shorter life expectancy, a time when healthcare costs really start to load up. Very interesting, but I still take it with a grain of salt. Like alot of things out there its hard to find anything without significant bias in one direction or another.
I don't support higher taxes on cigs, or the drink. All I want is laws across the board for no smoking in public places. Every week I play a gig with so much smoke in the air I start seeing spots before the night is up. That my friends is extremely uncool of smokers to do that to others. Otherwise, whomever wants a smoke should have one I don't care.

Move to California. We've had laws that have banned smoking in bars and restaurants as well as many other public places for years.

But if that increased taxation is used to prevent spread of an addiction and to pay for treatment of an addiction, I see no harm.

Good old Oklahoma. Can't smoke where food is served but bars are still thick clouds of death. Sometimes I wonder if playing is enjoyable enough to put up with it! Correct answer is no, health first - but dang I love playing!!!
About 10 years ago, I read an article for school (that was already kinda dated due to data compilation) and the taxes generated only helped about 1/3rd of the associated costs generated by smoking.
I take it you don't know many smokers.
If they paid their way with healthcare and didn't treat the planet like their personal ashtray, I might give them the benefit of the doubt. Smokers tend to not value their health and don't care who picks up the tab.
Oh yeah cause we all know that legalizing pot across the board would be awesome, no throat,lung,mouth or any other smoking cancer, it would be all healthy for everyone.

To a degree. I don't want a free for all, but don't see a good reason to support the existence of an ugly black market. More relaxed than now, though, yes.
I could not, would not do it. I don't associate with anyone on a regular basis who smokes. That might sound harsh, but that's how much I dislike it.
I haven't been able to find the thread where how the tax system (re: sin taxes) works, yet. Still looking.
My (admittedly weak) understanding is that taxes are collected into a lump account, then divided up. In other words, the money collected from sin taxes doesn't go directly into paying for health care, and gas taxes don't go directly into road upkeep, etc. I could be mistaken though, I'm not a tax expert.

If smokers picked up the tab, it wouldn't be their business or any of ours.
