So I was perusing through reverb and came across this listing.

IMO a signature (even Vic's) does nothing for an instrument - unless maybe you're the Hard Rock Cafe and you're buying more wall art.

way WAY overpriced. The autograph doesn't really add to the instrument's value simply because it isn't particularly difficult to acquire Victor's autograph.

When valuing any item that is signed, the value is the value of the item + the cost of the signature. In this case the value of the bass.

To be honest, none of the three options are really ringing my bell. I personally would be hard pressed to justify spending over $2000 for any bass.

Signatures from most musicians have way less value than a lot of people think. Rarity is one of the few things that can increase the value, and a signature from Victor Wooten is not rare.

Hell, Vic appears to be such a nice guy he'd probably be happy to give out his signature after a show or demo. I bet you could pay to fly out to one of his shows, have him sign whatever you want, and fly home and it would still cost half as much as the markup on that bass.

This is more true than you think. At every show he does, he comes out after the show and will sign anything for anyone. He will stay as long as it takes.

I saw him 20 years ago in my little college town. He did it then.

I saw him several weeks ago with the trio. He still does it.

I think Vic is an even better human than he is a bass player.

But his signature ain't rare.

I went to a Victor clinic at a Sam Ash in NJ around 7-8 years ago. He signed my Monarch Deluxe for free. On the back of the headstock. He even played it a bit. Real nice guy. And he never sent me a bill for $5000.

I also think we (bass players) overvalue Victor's name appeal. Move outside of bass-centric circles, even within other musician circles, and the name recognition drops off a cliff. How many of your friends/family/bandmates only know about him because of you? The only people in my circle of friends that would be aware of him are Dave Matthews Band cultists.

Most people wouldn't consider $5K reasonable for Taylor Swift's autograph. Imagine trying to tell those people you want that much for an obscure virtuoso bassist's signature.

Is that where he came from? I've been wondering, but never cared enough to look it up. I'm not really in to musicians. I'm in to music. I just started hearing about him about a year ago. I've watched like 2 or so YouTube videos. He's pretty good. But, that's about as far as that went.

It's surprising to me that he agreed to sign a boutique bass like that.One would think that the response should have been .......'hey dude I don't want to upset you but I'd rather not scribble on your beautiful instrument'

I have played two of those - a new one in the Fodera shop, and one owned by a friend. They are sure beautiful (when they're not all marked up on the front and back), but neither played anywhere near as nice as this one, which I would sell for half the price of that one. It is one of only 10 made with a flamed cedar top (5 fretted, 5 fretless), and it received not only a signature but a big thumbs up for the great setup and playability.
