So many threads on this, HYSTERIA!!

I noticed on the Muse Wiki that Chris has been using a Digitech Bass Synth Wah since the Absolution album. Anybody know what for, and what settings? I can approximate a decent Hysteria-esque tone with that and a Boss ODB-3, I wonder if that's what he's using it for live?

You'll never get his exact tone, no matter what you do. Recorded tones are always different than normal amplifier tones, there are multiple tracks, Di's, you can adjust everything between all instrument for it to sound perfect.

Then you have his live tone, Muse only play big venues that have multiple soundguys, again taking multiple tracks, mixing them on the fly then sending them to a big fullrange Pa, with subs, mid drivers, tweeters etc.

Now, if you were to see Muse in a small 200-300 people club, hearing the real sound of their amps with only minor Pa backing, now that would be the tone you might achieve with all those effects and tri-amping and I'm pretty sure it would be quite different compared to what you hear on cd's or stadiums shows.

Actually, if you try hard enough, you can get a tone that is very close...

You assume I am tuning the tone using my bass amp, and not studio moniters, at full spectrum. You also assume that I am a newb with nothing better to do than tone chase.

The Bass Synth wah I believe is used for songs like sunburn live, but the rest is unknown.

As for hysteria, there are plenty of ways to get close, without nailing it... I just happen to play Pedulla basses, and have a Deep Impact, and a Human Gear animato into a DBS head. It is my thrid marshall bass head, and I am waiting for my other DBS head to get out of the shop.

I know the signal was tri-amped in the studio, and live. He uses 4 7400 DBS heads, and a b150 marshall combo. His board is controlled by a Rocktron, so knowing the routing is almost impossible.

However, using the Deep Impact on one loop, and the Animato on the other, blending clean signal in, you can get a very close convincing copy of it. I have used the MJM Britbender on it, a muff, the woolly mammoth on the dirt side, and it all comes down to the Synth. Dirt is dirt when blending with clean and synth. The more gated, or clean the dirt is, the better.

Maybe he did use the Roland J8000, or maybe it is the Deep Impact. We will never know...

For anyone interested, I do have the seperated studio tracks of that song, bass only if you are interested.

i think you could get almost spot on if you were to run:

boss LS2 with loop 1 your big muff, loop 2 the deep impact (if you can dial in his settings, of course)

all of that inside a clean blender, to bring in some clean tone.

to me the recording sounds like the fuzz track has some reverb or was recorded with a mic placed kinda far from the amp, but then again i dont listen to muse so i might be remembering wrong.

either way if i wanted that sounds, i'd try the signal mentioned above.

Well, while I agree that it is not exactly the tone (as in you can't tell the difference between them) I have found it. I recorded the song last night, and we are working on post production of the tracks to show you that it can in fact be done...

Tracks coming soon!!!!

Well, here is the update.

Signal path is as follows:

Pedulla Rapture RB4 Single Pick Up> Boss LS-2...

Chain A: Human Gear Animato (11:00/1:00/1:00) > Return
Chain B: Russian Black Big Muff (Dimed/1:30/ 4:00) > Return

LS-2 out into Marshall DBS 7400 > 4x10 and 1x15

Straight from the bass the signal was split using a Direct Box. Clean has been blended in to provide some bottom. We used the following inputs:

Clean from the direct box
Pedals from my peterson
Preamp out of the amp
Mic on lower left 10" speaker.

This is the closest I have ever heard of a cover of this tone. You can tell this is not Chris playing, as I do not play the intro, and I am messing around in the beginning.

Let me know what you think. Any other Muse Bass players need info on the rig, or sound settings, let me know. I have a lot of the info you need.

Here is a link to the muselive thread I could host an MP3 on...
