So many threads on this, HYSTERIA!!

OK, Hysteria. It's been done hundreds of times but here we go again.

THERE IS NO SYNTH PEDAL IN THIS SONG.

Matt Bellamy plays a Roland synth on the recording. I can't remember the model, it's a JF 200 or something, got lot's of 2's and 0's in the name. Live Muse play to a click track that play's the synth while Chris Wolstenholme plays the bass line underneath. He has one full Marshall valve rig which is clean, and a small Marshall MB150 amp for distortion. On the recording I'm not sure what Chris plays, but it sounds like a distorted bass and a clean bass. The clean has an octave down. The distortion will come from his animato or russian big muff, he has never had 7 big muffs in a row, despite what teh internets say.

If I was to recommend a way of recreating it, i'd say just big muff and scoop all of the mids out, it sounds especially good with a valve preamp. If you have a good synth pedal then go for a sawtooth wave. To be honest, I'd recommend trying to find your own tone, the song has a lot of 'studio magic' in it.

As i said earlier on, I'm not looking to dupe his tone, but I am interested in how he gets it.

Sounds interesting with the live click-track, how do you know this? I mean, do you have any insider knowledge that will make me believe you over everybody else.

I have his tone for this song.

I use the Deep Impact, MJM Brit Bender Fuzz and an LS-2 to combine them with eachother and clean.

Flintlock, Toasted states differently. Toasted says that he did infact use the DI for this song, and I have video of him playing it in the studio with the DI on..

If you want the tricks, PM me.

errmmm no. I too was interested, and spent ages researching how he creates the tone. The click track is true, not just for Muse, but most modern bands. The drummer has a metronome in his ear, and everyone plays to that. It allows samples, screens, pyrotechnics etc all to run at the right time, as well as keeping the drummer in perfect time. I can't offer any evidence, but if you watch the HAARP footage of Time is Running Out you can hear the synthesised clapping and clicking before Chris starts playing.

Oh, ok.. I see what you mean now. Funny how every tune from the HAARP dvd is closer to the studio-versions than usual. Must have put some extra effort into that.

You are probably correct, I've just always heard that the Deep Impact isn't used. I've certainly heard that a lot of the synth comes from a Roland unit. My point is that the song is very difficult/impossible to recreate, because it was made in a very studio orientated way. Even live it sounds very different (especially Absolution era).

P.S I really love that band in your sig.

Thanks... That is my band...

I'd very much like to hear that. Sorry if I reincarnated this thread but I had to post on it. I think I've done a pretty good job emulating his live tone. Here's a quick little snippet (timing is a bit off but I'm lazy.)

Right side click download.

I mixed a little more OD into it since that's what's more dominant in his live tone. Couldn't remember exact compression settings so it sounds sloppy when I hammer the string too hard.

Also got Time is Running Out and Supermassive tones just about perfect too. Still trying to figure out a few more Muse songs.
