Double Bass So this happened....

Loading back in after a gid, I hear a thud behind me and know what happened before I even turned around...

I cannot quite see it, but it might have re-fractured along the previous fracture. The dowel helped only a little...

Indeed: fixable with a proper graft.
 
Exactly. There are payers who have broken their neck and those that are going to. It is part of the design flaw- take a tiny little violin neck and then scale it up six times the size with tremendous string tension and the proportions don't work out very well. Most of the time you'll wind up with a better bass in the end after it has been all fixed up- nothing like a custom fit neck just for your hands and playing specs on a vintage instrument; ' my favorite. There are also a few repair methods that are much cheaper and will allow you to limp it around for a couple of years before the larger task, but the once a century option is upon you.

Just a few minutes ago I was having a conversation about the time I actually had a neck fail and completely fly off the bass on stage about 20 years ago....
