So what does a $25k bass actually get you?

If that were true then there wouldn't be 10 times as many threads (or more) extolling the virtues of cheap bases than threads bragging on expensive basses. I see at least a thread a week talking about how great this cheap bass or, or that cheap bass is. I'm not sure when the last thread was were someone was bragging on how great their expensive bass is, although I'm sure there are some.

What does a $25k bass get you? A presumably nice bass, but it also gets the thinly veiled jealousy and anonymous internet comments of a large portion of TalkBass members.

I personally couldn’t afford a $25k bass and wouldn’t buy one even if I could, but I enjoy seeing people excited over new gear regardless of the price tag. Doesn’t change the fact that my basses were worth whatever I paid for them to me.

I grabbed this off the internet so it is not my graph. The point is the Law of Diminishing Returns. The more you pay for a bass the better quality you get to a point. Then the more you pay the less quality increment you get in return. Of course there are exceptions to every rule.

It would get me anxiety, that's what it would get me. Can't imagine having that on display unless it was protected in a locked box of bullet-proof glass in my impenetrable fortress surrounded by a moat of hungry crocodiles– stuff I'd be able to afford if I bought that bass. And then gigging with it, the thought of that would give me a heart attack.

Expensive things often cost a lot! News at 11 (well more like 10pm here - I am not staying up to 11 to find out that expensive things are expensive!)

Good enough might be a lot cheaper.

How do you know how productive the individual who spent 6 million on a car is? Maybe they spend exponentially more, bettering the lives of thousands by giving them awesome jobs or maybe they donate millions to cancer research or other "noble" causes. Who are you to make that judgement?

An expensive bass as such is most certainly not in my wheelhouse, tops for me is about 1-2k. If someone has the means and it brings them creativity and joy, then that's cool. For them it's worth it. Everyone's parameters are different.

For me, I would not want to have an expensive custom bass like that. I'd be afraid to touch it and breath on it wrong. I couldn't enjoy it.
