Sorta the same for me... small practice amp for the house. It was a guitar amp not a bass amp so I at least could switch it because of that. It was a brand I’d never buy or even steal, salesman was a guitarist and never asked what she needed. Brand name I’ll leave out in case it’s “your” brand. So , I learned ..... never return anything, ever !

Anyways, my wife bought me a brand new Rickenbacker from MF. She didn't know which basses are good or bad, so she googled it and Ricks came up then she ordered one.

She wanted it to arrive on our day, but was told it is a special order, and due to the COVID-19 it wasn't going to arrive until December.

Well the bass obviously wasn't going to be ready in time to hit our anniversary, so my wife's plan was to tell me about it on our anniversary and then I'd wait for it to arrive.

So I told her, no that's ok I don't like the looks of Ricks and you can give me the money instead and I'll put it towards a nice rack EQ I have my eye on (I'm trying to get my freelance mixing and mastering gigs off the ground).

She was disappointed in that decision a little bit, but honestly I have all the basses I need and no GAS for basses right now. I'm a Leo guy anyway...p bass, j bass and musicman right now.

So am I nuts for turning down a brand new Rick?

No, you did the right thing. They are over priced, hard to play, ugly, and if you don't really want it you are going to despise it. You would have ended up just selling it for a loss anyway.

I played a late 60s P-bass for about 10 years when little things started to bother me: the weight, the way it hung on my shoulder and its lack of sonic flexibility. I got rid of it, got a new '79 4001 (viewable in the photo to the left) and I'm still playing it. I have other basses, but the Ric has far and away the most playing time of all my instruments. You'll love its punch and its perfect balance between lows and highs. And - - let's face it -- they look really cool.

You all will be happy to know (or maybe don't care ) that I went ahead and told her I want the Rick. She smiled and said ok. I've never played one before in my 25 years on the bass, or even heard one live. I took a listen on YT and it is a sound I can use in my songs. The stereo output may come in handy for the studio too. Appreciate the replies from you guys.

I went from a P bass to a Ric in 1977, took a while to get used to but I really like them now and play both. I now own 11 different basses, 3 Fenders, 2 Rics, 3 Gibsons, 1 Epi, 1 Eko and one Hohner, after playing Fenders I had to learn to get used to the Rics and the Gibsons, just stick with them and you'll have 2 distinctly different sounding and looking basses. I like the diversity.

They aren't that rare, or expensive.
