I have my best friends Epiphone Dot. It was an aniversary gift from his now ex-wife. It's in my possession because he moved across the country and could only take one guitar. So he took the Gibson Les Paul that she and his family bought for him as a graduation present. (They were still together at the time, and if he took any other guitar they might not have survived long past the move!)
He always said things like he'd like to pick out his own guitar, and he wasn't crazy about the Dot, and he thought of upgrading it but at the end of the day he never did. Always stuck to the gift guitars and he was right to do that.
Now I know my friend isn't moving back to Ontario ever and I'm basically the default owner of his guitar. I don't like it, I wont record with it 95% of the time, I'm not even a good guitarist. But I've sold a couple guitars I got as gifts and I also gave someone one of my nicest guitars as a gift that they sold without telling me. It just feels kinda crappy either way. This one stays till either he takes it back, or I'm homeless or dead.
I must say I don't get the people even talking about selling it. I get the feeling of I must sell what I don't use so I can acquire gear I will use. It just isn't always necessary, especially with instruments that have sentimental value. There's nothing lost by hanging up a special bass and using it as a visual center-piece and a reminder of your wife's love.
And sure we don't need to accept every gift offered to us, there's always situations where it's okay to turn down a gift. This wasn't one of them. Worse then that it wasn't coming from a sweet place, or a place of wanting to spare his wife the unnecessary expense. The OP responded selfishly and cold from what we can tell.
It's one thing to say I love the thought you put into this, and I really appreciate it. It's just feels like you're spending too much on me. I'd love any bass you got me, even a $100 one. The fact alone that you researched something I care about and want to show support for such an important part of my life really means a lot to me.
The OP's response from what I can tell was selfish and kind of cold. He treated the gift like he was personally picking out gear for himself.
Now none of us were there. We don't know the words used and that makes a big difference. I just hope it all works out for OP and his wife as it sounds like he's one lucky

Enjoy the Ric! I'm a Leo man myself and would never buy one but if gifted one I'd play the hell out of it! It'd be one of the nicest things I'd ever receive and I'd want to show that off. Plus they sound wicked.

Man, if your wife buys you a Daisy Rock bass, you swallow your pride, you say thank you honey and make it your main axe.
Cool, but birthdays, and Christmases, are not wedding anniversaries.
Pack a bag now, because at some point in the future, you're going on a guilt trip.
When they've finished developing, and have the same divorce laws as the rest of us - that'll change
