So what's the stereotypical "Dad" amp?

Quitter. Someday I'll finally be cool.It's just a way for the whippersnappers to get digs in at those of us who gave up our rock star dreams to raise families, and somewhere along the line gave up trying to be rock star cool. Hence the shorts, flip flops, Hawaiian shirts and Ibanez basses.
Yeah, yeah, I know... eventually I'll be room-temperature, so it'll happen one way or another.

The modern Dad amp is any black 3lb 800w Class D microhead with a tiny 112 cabinet, because he "doesn't need all those knobs" and "doesn't know how to set a graphic eq." He boasts it is the "tone he always wanted" and "the last amp he will ever need" until a certain company comes out with a new Class D less than a year later that has a "bloomier" sound. Then, he will promptly attempt to sell the old version, seemingly suddenly completely unloved, here on Talkbass.
He always talks about how he loves that "sweet tube amp overdrive grind" yet uses the most sterile clean tone possible, turns the master all the way up to use the input gain as a volume control, and absolutely does not touch any of those other knobs because "tone is in your hands."
He "sets everything at 12 noon" (regardless if those settings are actually flat or not-the knobs must be straight up and down!) and "has FOH support anyway" and absolutely won't carry anything that doesn't fit in his gigbag, cords and pedals and amps and all. One trip, car to club, that's it!!!
He also has the most bland, invisible, boring, generic, worthless bass tone that no one will notice, hear, or care about.
That's a Dad amp.

Those SKB doors are nicely sealed making the rack enclosure an ideal beer table! I'm always a little worried about putting my beer on my newer gear. Not worried enough to stop doing it. But still...

I've only given up trying to be cool. I'm a far better musician than when I was chasing the rock star dream, and my tastes are more sophisticated and refined. I don't give a rat's booty if anybody thinks I'm cool.
And I used almost this same exact setup as recently as 4 years ago. But the 700rbii, and the newest version of the Hartke, the 410XL5.5, both of which are still being made, I think. But the rig was absolute tone nirvana, a great match and perfect for the Clapton trib I was in. But alas, 95 pounds of cab, and smaller gigs now has me in class d head and two 210s.
He won't give it up!! Stubborn dad!It's not really a Dad Amp until he's on his second or third one though.

LOL! Talkbass-chic Dad here. Currently using Mesa Subway Amps and Cabs, Bergantino/Demeter before that.
I don't even know what that means...But I like it!
