Admittedly, they're on the "easy listening" side of soft rock but I think The Carpenters squeak in by virtue of the the guitar solo in Goodbye to Love.

Carpenters were AMAZING. Richard was a wonderful arranger. And Karen's voice... *shiver*
That particular tune, to me, has always been an example of a well-played, well-arranged, well-written, well-produced, etc piece of Pop music.
Add "Out In The Country", "Make It With You", "Superstar", et al.
Back in the early-mid '70s, when I was on a strict diet of Hard/Acid Rock...anything other than that was considered "Soft" Rock.slander! power pop is not soft rock!

No, it was a "sub-genre" back when. One example that comes to mind is:
Genre shmanra. I suffer from CRS, so who knows. Never was much for sub sub sub sub sub genres and their derivatives. Either I liked a song or I didn't. Glad I'm not a Metalhead. If I cared that would drive me crazy(er).
